So, I am Australian, and my fiance and I have decided it might be better that we live in Australia, rather than the U.S. At what stage can I leave the U.S and start the process in order for her to come to Australia?

Would I lose my U.S greencard?
I don't wish to give that up, because we can go back to the U.S at some point.

Do I have to wait until I am an American citizen for dual citizenship?

Thanks.

How long do you intend going to Australia for?

You can leave whenever you want. The rub is that you will loose your GC if you do not live in the US or maintain your LPR status which is hard to do if you are not living in the US. If returning is important to you and you do not want to wait for a spousal visa to be granted--this is assuming your finacee is a USC--then waiting on citizenship is the best course as a USC can be out of the US for as long as they want and the CBP must let them back into the US--they may give you a hard time, but USCs are the only group of people that are guaranteed to be admitted to the US.

The choice is your, but please look at the requirements for maintaining your LPR status and the implications of not doing so for your situation so you can make an informed decision.

Good luck,

Dave

Thank you for your informative answer, it was very helpful.

I think I will just wait for u.s citizenship, it is only 3 years. Yes I am marrying a U.S citizen. The thing is, after visiting Australia, she really likes it here, and there are a lot of benefits to living here that we would not get in the U.S. So, I guess we will live in the U.S until I get citizenship, and then start the spousal visa process for her to move back to Australia with me. The good thing is, after it's all done, we will both have dual citizenship right?

So we can come and go from both countries as we like, see family, etc
