The microbuses in Egypt are truly an experience. I was riding one once.....and.....I kid you not.....the door of the microbus fell off in the middle of Kobry Sit-October.....I couldn't believe it and was shocked and everyone else wasn't that surprised at all..... they were just worried about the inconvenience of delay and questioned the driver how long it would take for him & the guy who collected the fares to have to drive back, pick up the door, and put it back on!!

Every time I rode those little microbuses I would get sick! Guess it was a combination of the pollution and the car fumes.

Ok, now I can tell my husband's best minibus story again, huzzah!

So, he was coming from his hometown to Cairo to meet me at the airport. He hopped on a microtaxi and a little ways into the ride, the driver announced that the breaks had failed, and what would they like to do? Everyone was like, on to Cairo, inshaAllah! So, they trundle along through the Egyptian countryside and through a variety of towns, no breaks. They roll into Cairo and my husband manages to throw himself out of the taxi at Ramses, lol!

My husband has had way too many encounters with runaway trucks, crazy buses and inattentive cars. I think he's been involved in at least a dozen hits, crashes or near misses since I've met him in 2001.

anyone ever have thermise?? I think I am spelling it right. You put lime and salt on it.

and Um Kalthoum... I love her.. for 5 years I have listened to her music.. Enta omri.. Wallahi it makes me still cry

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGnsnKRBGKo

Your eyes took me back to my days that are gone

They taught me to regret the past and its wounds

Whatever I saw before my eyes saw you was a wasted life.

How could they consider that part of my life?

With your light, the dawn of my life started

How much of my life before you was lost

It is a wasted past, my love.

My heart never saw happiness before you

My heart never saw anything in life other than the taste of pain and suffering.

I started only now to love my life

And started to worry that my life would run away from me

Every happiness I was longing for before you

My dreams they found it in the light of your eyes

Oh my heart’s life .. You are more precious than my life

Why I didn't meet your love a long time ago?

Whatever I saw before my eyes saw you was a wasted life

How could they consider that part of my life

You are my life that starts its dawn with your light

The beautiful nights and the yearning and the great love

From a long time ago the heart is holding for you.

Taste the love with me bit by bit from the kindness of my heart that is longing for the kindness of your heart

Bring your eyes close so that my eyes can get lost in the life of your eyes

Bring your hands so that my hands will rest in the touch of your hands.

........................ etc.

Do you know arabic that well to know what she's singing? I almost cry but only because of the emotion she puts into it but i have no clue what she's singing. lol.

btw I told Usama about all the songs we wrote about yesterday and he almost started crying....which didn't help since I was already crying. I think he's finally on the same cycle as me.

Speaking of accidents and cars, I remember driving with him in a cab and all of a sudden even though there were supposed to be three lanes now four cars were in a row and the cabbie totally side scraped this woman's brand new car. He didn't even pull over or anything and neither did she!! Why anyone would buy a brand new car in that city is beyond me. Give me something old and rusty that runs and I'd be good to go...IF I ever dared driving there.

Is it like 16 more days now or something till you go? I decided to book Alitalia once my tax refund gets here hopefully this weekend insha Allah. They're the only one so far that is 1)really cheap ... like about $1,100 total and 2) only a 2 1/2 hour or so layover in Milan. All the other flights this summer have like 8+ hour layovers either on both legs or at least one of them and no way am I doing that again!!! Iberia is having real cheap flights lately too, cheaper than Alitalia but they have a 9 1/2 hour layover each way. Plus Alitalia lands in Cairo at a decent hour, I think around 3pm, which will be good since we'll then take the train to Alexandria.

I bet you're wicked excited!!!

You know those men who have the black bumpy circles on their foreheads in Cairo? I asked Usama about that and he said that some men are blessed with that from Allah for praying so much. He said that he never got it though even during a period in his life where he nearly lived in a mosque. I was just curious.....do you think they're all real or do you think some of the men actually draw it on there?

This may not set right with some, but its really not as conflicting as it sounds. The "bumps" are actually caused by constant rubbing of the forehead on the ground during prayer... like an irritation that has scarred. At least that's the way it was explained to me.
