If you don't mind my asking, chococat, where is your husband from? Mine's from a farming town (Kafr el Dawar)...now that was roughin' it!

My husband is from a place called Helwan. I didnt stay with him though. I come from a very strict family, both islamically and culture wise. We did our islamic marriage and everything but my father refused to let us spend some time together because he didnt get an apartment yet. We never "ya know." So we when we went out, I had to have my brother with me.

Oh wait..after our ceremony we went out to eat with my brother. My husband forgot his phone in his car, so my brother ..being the kind guy he is..offered to go get it so we can have "sometime alone." My husband started talking to me telling me I looked nice and everything, and there goes my brother. He was back in less than 2 minutes.

It was hard for me, we stayed in a place with no hot water..donkeys..roosters. My family back home is really stubborn, they felt it was rude of us to leave somewhere alone. But honestly, the experience has taught me to thank Allah for everything I've got. :innocent:

So yeah I dont know if I should call him my husband anymore, maybe he is just my fiance??

hi chococat my fiance is fro ( HELWAN ) too

Wow! My husband is from Helwan too

My husband doesn't think that all muslim knowledge comes from Egypt but he does (my ex did as well) warn me about reading books written by Shi'a.

thought i'd resurrect this thread since what I'm gonna say is Egypt related. lol.

So I'm taking this course from sunnipath.com and told the hubster all about it tonight. He was excited that I'm doing this and then I told him the title of one of the recommended books. He asked me the author and while I hunted for it he proceeded to warn me that these new people should not be listened to and that he'll get me books from the old scholars. I told him the guy was pakistani and he said, "mmmmmmmm. I will get a book for you from an Egyptian.".

lol

I'm like, "why?" and he just looked and said, "do you know where the Pakistani's have learned what they know?" "do you know where the Saudi's have learned what they know?"...............(he went on about a few more countries....) and then he said "Egypt is the one who knows all. We are where they all go to to learn. Al Ahzar is where all of the knowledge comes from so why learn from a Pakistani when you can learn from an Egyptian."

So I'm not buying the book. lol.

Do your spouses/fiances feel that all muslim knowledge is from Egypt?

What was the book?

There aren't a lot of hanafis in Egypt, so that may be why he was like  When I was looking at different madhabs, I had originally chosen the hanafis, because they've produced a lot of good books in english, whereas the other madhabs (especially the hanbalis) are lagging behind.

I personally like to learn from scholars from everywhere. The husband doesn't have any issues with that, since he's an odd duck himself and likes Ibn Hazm, who was Andalusi.

My favorite is Imam al Ghazali and he was from Persia.

It wasn't so much the book as the author. He doesn't really care for the new ones. He is hanafi which is why I chose that course.

I'd be curious as to who the author is doodle, if you don't mind. Most hanafi related material today in english comes from Pakistan and India. He'll be hard pressed to find any english hanafi related books that don't come from there.

If I may suggest it, my favorite book is Inner Dimensions of Islamic Worship by Imam al Ghazali. Reading it has given me much deeper insight into salat especially

I'm not aware of many egyptian authors that are translated into english. If he suggests some, send em my way. I do have some books about modern egypt - Mobilizing Islam is the best one I've read that introduces Islamic activism in Egypt.

The Absolute Essentials of Islam by Faraz Rabbani

I have it :star: Sheikh Faraz is uber cool. He's Pakistani Canadian, and has been teaching and studying in Jordan for several years. He also teaches several Sunnipath courses. I'd definately catagorize him in the knowledgable people in the tradition of the Prophet (saws) category.

http://www.sunnipath.com/about/shaykhfaraz.aspx

Faraz Fareed Rabbani was born in Karachi, Pakistan and raised in Toronto, Canada. He entered the University of Toronto with a full scholarship and completed his Bachelor's in Economics & Commerce in May 1997. While in Canada, Shaykh Faraz was involved with various organizations and projects, including founding and running the monthly The Muslim Voice and acting as the Vice-President of the University of Toronto MSA from 1994-1996. While in Toronto, he was involved in various Islamic study circles and educational programs, including those of Shaykh Ahmad Talal al-Ahdab, Shaykh Faisal Abd al-Razzaq, and Shaykh Muhammad Zahid Abu Ghudda.

After graduation, Shaykh Faraz traveled with his family to Damascus, Syria, to formally seek Islamic knowledge. In Damascus, he studied Arabic, Aqida, Mantiq, Hanafi Fiqh, Shafi'I Fiqh, Usul al-Fiqh, and Hadith with a number of scholars including Shaykh Haytham Idilbi, Shaykh Abd al-Rahman Kharsa, Shaykh Abd al-Haleem Abu Sha`r, Shaykh Umar al-Sabbagh, Shaykh Jihad Brown, Shaykh Mu'min al-Annan, Shaykh Hassan al-Hindi, Sayyidi Shaykh Adib Kallas, Shaykh Muhammad Jumuah, Sh. Abd al-Razzaq al-Halabi, Shaykh Haytham, Shaykh Abd al-Haleem Abu Sha`r, and Ustadh Mahmud al-Bayruti. In the Summer of 2000, he moved to Amman, Jordan. Upon moving to Jordan, his teachers advised him to focus on teaching what he had covered, for which they gave him encouragement and permission, and to continue his personal research and study.

He has two published books: Sufism & Good Character and The Absolute Essentials of Islam: A Basic Hanafi Primer on Faith, Prayer, & the Path of Salvation. [White Thread Press, 2004. He also runs the blog Seeker's Digest and has a regular column in Islamica Magazine. As the founder of the original Hanafi fiqh list, Shaykh Faraz has been involved with SunniPath since its beginning. At SunniPath, an online Islamic academy, Shaykh Faraz teaches fiqh, aqeeda, and other subjects. He also serves as Director of SunniPath's Answers Service. He currently lives in Amman, Jordan with his wife and three children.

Again he didn' tknow anything about the author at all. Just said I should stick to Egyptians and old scholars.

I think what he meant was that nowdays there are so many unreliable resources. I know there is a younger egyptian man, by the name of Amr Khalid who does a lot of lectures all over the Middle East, Europe and Canada. I was told by my husband that a lot of hadiths were wrong, he had no type of proof as to where he even found these hadiths. I think he just wants you to be on the safe side, and by listening to old scholars who have been listened to over and over again by others I think this helps.

Al-Azhar acutally has a lot great scholars, but not all are Egyptian. You see a lot from all over the Middle East, Pakistan, and Indonesia. Its best to listen to scholars who have solid proof.

And now you see books such as this one.... "The True Furqan" The word Furqan means the difference between good and evil, so the Quran can be referred as Furqan in the arabic language.

http://www.islam-in-focus.com/TheTrueFurqan.htm#

It is even being sold on Amazon.

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...1-2395342%22%5D

One can easily tell that it is Manmade. Alhamdulilah that the Quran is memorized by people all over (I have seen children as small as 8 years old mashaallah) and can not be changed in any way...not even a letter  . Its just really crucial that if someone is not sure of something to ask an Imam, or one that you are sure that knows his/her stuff well. Allah swt said that if one is unsure of something to ask those who are from Ahl el Thikr (those who are knowledgeable of the Religion of Allah swt)

Allah SWT knows best...

I like Amr Khaled  I wouldn't get my Islamic Knowledge from him, but watching his shows is a definately Iman booster

I especially liked his Ramadan series this year - In Thy name, we live - which went over different names of Allah (swt) each day.

You can find them on Google Video with subtitles. I tried to watch it during iftar instead of watching Sex in the City, lol!

Lol, I really do like him too, I do have to give him so credit. I think he is just more of those motivational type speakers for me, just like you said an Iman booster. :innocent: He comes up with some really good ideas for things to do during Ramadan..and how to keep yourself busy..things for zakat..just different ways you can think about things..He gets you thinking and his words do touch my heart because he mentions things we can relate to nowadays..such as the struggle to keep our Iman strong in this day and age. I do agree with you Rahma, 110%!! :D

Really? I always thought shafi'is dominated. Thinking about it now, I guess Ottoman domination would = hanafi laws, but I had always assumed it was like other arab areas of the ottoman empire, where the laws were hanafi based, but the people stuck with their previous madhabs.

bump. I've been dreaming about Egypt while I'm freezing my booty off here in minnesota. The husband is probably going for a visit sometime this year inshaAllah, for the first time since he's been here. He's saving up his PTO from work and wants to go for a month. I'm thinking about joining him for a week.
