AFAIK

Depending on the state you need an SSN to get a marriage license, the best time to do this is two weeks after she gets their, this allows enough time for you're record on entry into country to be on the database, or so ive read

Most people on VJ say get it before the marriage, also that is what it says to do in the guide. I don't know if it is better or not but that is what we did and it was easy. We applied for it 3 days after her entering the US. Just take her passport and don't forget to print out the I-94 otherwise you will be turned away.

Is she planning on taking your last name? If so- I would wait until after the wedding ceremony to avoid an additional trip to the social security office. Otherwise, what everyone above said :)

According to the guide, it's better to get the SSN issued with the same name used on the I-94. Easy to change afterwards.

Sure- changing is super easy! However, it can involve spending several hours at your local social security office, depending on how busy they are :)

Just be prepared for your local office to be potentially confused - although we had someone who had worked there for over 30 years, he had NEVER done a SSN for anyone entering the US on a K visa.

Negative

We got my Fiance her SSN the 3rd day she was here. We got married like 45 days later, and just recently went back to SS office to change to her married name, since she only had like 10 days left on her 90 day visa entry they computer would not let the counter person proceed with getting SSN in her married name.

I think you need to have at least so many days (16 is what I have researched) left on K1 visa date to get any type of SSN

It's up to you when you want to get the SSN.

Nope, not true. An SSN is not required for getting a marriage license. It doesn't matter which state you live in. They may require one IF you have an SSN, but if you don't then usually all they need is ID such as the passport.

Do not wait to get it under married name, it's a lot more hassle than if you get it in Visa name and change it later. So many people on VJ have been turned away at the SSN office, after waiting hours, just to have to go back after the EAD is granted and wait again.

Just get it at least 2 weeks before the I-94 expires in visa name before marriage. Fix it later.

You never need an SSN to be married in the USA. If your county asks for it and you don't have it, then simply go to a new county.

We'll see how things work for us. We'll be getting my fiancée's SSN after marriage. She'll enter the country on Feb 23 in Hawaii, we'll spend about a week there before traveling home to Dallas then we'll be in Orlando for our wedding on Mar 11. We'll file for the SSN after we return to Dallas the following week along with filing for AOS. I'll try to remember to post our experience at the SS office here.

I speak from our bad experience of waiting until after we got married to get SSN!

Before you are "settled in" and un-packed, go to your SSN office, and apply, as your I-94 should be in the system, in a day or two after P.O.E., and get the SSN card under your un-married name, then after the marriage, take a copy (certified) of marriage cert., and just change your name.

We waited after the marriage, there was no record of my wife's name, as she used her married name, she came here, I-94 under maiden name, it would have been so easy, but we goofed up! Do not make the same mistake. We made 5 trips to the SSN office and then had to have a special "person" there to get our mess straightened up!
