when you are your husband are finally together (or are already)... would you rather:

work three days a week (say 20 hours a week max) and make okay/decent money.

or work full-time (say 50 or so) and make a lot of money.

I won't really have a choice since I have two daughters to support. If I did not have kids I wouldn't work at all and I'd be living in Egypt.

Eventually he does want me to quit, but he knows that we have to keep living in the manner to which my girls have become accustomed, so unless he's a brilliant salesman once he gets here that will take a loooooooooooooooooooooong time.

Right now I work 50-60 hours a week on average and make a pretty good salary. When my husband gets here "insh'allah" I will not be working so many hours...I have already had this discussion with my boss. I will stick to 40 hours a week and anything over that which might be necessary I can do from home.

When the time comes, if they don't like that...I guess I'll be looking for a new company to work for. Gotta balance it out because I refuse to work so much after he is here.

i'm having a tough time deciding what to do. i currently work about 20 hours with decent money but i have an opportunity now to work 50-60 hours but for almost double the salary. i would rather have more time with my husband but for us to eventually be able to afford a house, visit morocco a lot more often, etc i think maybe i should go with the full-time job because who knows what his career future will be like here. hmmmmmmmmmmm....

I would suggest taking the job with more hours. You are young and do not have children. Later on in your career, once you've proven yourself to this new company you can always negotiate a part time position. Before my kids came I worked about 60 to 70 hours/week and made a name for myself in the industry that I'm in. Once I was established and then got pregnant, they did not want to lose me and were very flexible working with what I wanted to do. Now is the time where you are able to make that money to store up a nice little nest egg for all those trips you want to take in the future!

o how i wish that were true for me. but i am a private chef (right now anyway) and if i can't work cuz i'm pregnant or have a baby, they hire someone else! that's the bad part about not being corporate.

maybe i should really seriously think about starting my own business before that happens so i can leave it for a while once i'm pregnant. :o

If you go to 50-60 hours, you are more than doubling/ basically tripling the time you will be working but only doubling your salary. I would consider holding off until you can find something that is 40 hours/double the money. Any chance of picking up more hours doing what you do now so the hours would be proportionate to the salary?

I am currently working 50 hours a week and not really enjoying the bite it takes out of my life. The money is nice, but money isn't everything. Mohammed is working steadily up to 40 hours a week, but mostly evenings and we are finding this difficult to adjust to. He has told his employer that he is a married man and expects some time with his wife so isn't available to work only evening shifts, but you know they schedule however they want to. We'll see how it goes. Moneywise, we're doing just fine but neither of us very high maintenance people and are happy just going with the flow for the time being until life gets more settled and we can set some higher goals. What I love about Mohammed is that he does not require me to work, nor does he require me not to work. I'm free to do whatever I feel is best for me. I just love that guy.

The reason I would consider the 50 hours/week is because then you could work hard at saving money for when something comes up! Especially like children! Even with maternity insurance, it's like 10k out of pocket to have a baby! So you kinda have to have a savings or else be forced to pay on medical bills!

None of my posts have ever been helpful. Be forewarned.

Well I think would rather work full time especially because he will be doing the same. However once we have kids, I'd like to eventually be able to stay at home which may or may not be possible.

I would rather work now (before he comes) work more hours while he is doing the same;save as much as we can to jump start our new life. Then when he arrives work 40 hours (normal work week), maybe little less depending if I can keep my benefits. Always have time after work and on weekends (together)... I think spending all the time together will cause  . I rather like the little time apart,(time seperated when both are working-->not this INS waiting :( ) so we can appreciate each other more. Aaaand I think I rather have stress from work, then stress from my husband. Home and families are the refuge of our busy daily lives. So if we spent all the day together, where and who would be my refuge? Does that make any sense? B)
