Even Barack Obama has mentioned it. At a 2007 NAACP forum that he attended as a presidential candidate, he told the crowd, "We have more work to do when more young black men languish in prison than attend colleges and universities across America."

So the Kenyan lied to black folks ? . He has been doing that to us white folks it seems like forever.

I guess he relied on faulty stats too. Who knew, stats can be biased.

Are you Black?

Once again, does it matter? You don't have to be black to post something like this. Nor do you have to be black to have empathy for people who aren't the same color as you are.

Then his stats could be correct and not the ones you have posted for this article.

Does it matter?

It does matter.

It seems a black person with a chip on their shoulder would post this.

I have never heard this "Myth about more blacks in prison versus college"

And it also seems to be an off the wall post not really dealing with anything related to what is a current or hot topic in our society.

Then his stats could be correct and not the ones you have posted for this article.

From the article you posted:

According to 2005 Census Bureau statistics, the male African-American population of the United States aged between 18 and 24 numbered 1,896,000. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, 106,000 African-Americans in this age group were in federal or state prisons at the end of 2005. See table 10 of this report. If you add the numbers in local jail (measured in mid-2006), you arrive at a grand total of 193,000 incarcerated young Black males, or slightly over 10 percent.

According to the same census data, 530,000 of these African-American males, or twenty eight percent, were enrolled in colleges or universities (including two-year-colleges) in 2005. That is five times the number of young black men in federal and state prisons and two and a half times the total number incarcerated. If you expanded the age group to include African-American males up to thirty or thirty five, the college attendees would still outnumber the prisoners.

This new graph is citing data from 2001, but still shows more black men are in college than in prison. Sorry to disrupt your world view like this. I'm sure you'll find something that we are doing wrong to make things right in your mind again.

It matters to you. All the justifications you cite are personal and subjective, which really means it doesn't matter at all in the big scheme of things.

How many black men are in prison in the U.S.?

846,000.

As of June 30, 2008, there are 846,000 black male inmates held in state or federal prisons or local jails in the United States. This represents 40.2% of all inmates for the same year. This data is based on the Prison Inmates at Midyear 2008 Statistical Tables of the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics. About 65% of black inmates are aged 20-39.

Looks like a lot of young blacks got released and were again arrested. ....

This link is as of today, 2015.

Why does she have to have a chip on her shoulder for pointing this out? Because when folks are in here talking about how jacked up black people and Muslims are using clips from 2007, no one is complaining.

Talk to your community leaders about it.

Why would a black person with a chip on their shoulder post this article? Is it not important to disprove false stats?

Sorry but you don't get to ask any questions until you answer the most important question of all:

Are you Black [sic]?

Even on VJ you get racially profiled if you post something that doesn't paint black people as some monolith of uneducated thugs and welfare queens. I guess only certain white people get to talk about black people issues. And it's always the ones who are "sick" of talking about it or bringing up the race card. <_<
