Renewing passport after DS260 submission (an especial case)

Hi everyone

I'm facing a little especial case here for my DV2015.

I am from Iran and I'm a selectee for DV2015. I have submitted DS260 last year. My passport expiry date is not for another year.

But however, I'm going to travel back home for a short period. The reason why I need to renew my passport is as follow:

I left Iran when I was a kid, so military service didn't apply to me as a kid (all boys above 18 must attend military service in Iran). So now, our government have a law for those working/studying overseas to be able to visit their family for a short period and be able to get out of the country again (if you haven't attend military service, you can't leave the country).

For any student/worker to leave, his passport has to have place of residence as a foreign country. If it doesn't, you'll have to renew your passport so they can change that to the country you're living in.

For this reason, I have to renew my passport. Now I have submitted my passport information in DS260, I was wondering, if I can renew my passport and inform Kentucky about this? So you'd know by now that US government are not expecting me to have my passport number changed as the expiry date is not any time soon.

The trip is not very urgent.. so I'd like to know the risk of this affecting me getting an interview and the success of getting a green card?

Sorry for the long question.

Cheers.

Lots of worry over nothing ;) People get new passports all the time after submitting their DS forms! You don't even need to update your DS - we didn't - but preferably bring both new and old passports to the interview.

One thing that may be an issue however - not sure about iran specifically but I know that for certain countries where military service is compulsory, they ask for a certificate of exemption if there is no record of completed service. You may want to find out from others in your situation if this is potentially a problem for you, or if you need to take something confirming that is the case for someone with foreigh residence.

Hi Susie!

Thank you very much for your day reply as always :-).

I'll have to check on the military service completion requirements..

So I understand from your reply that if my passport number is different than the one on my DS260 form it shouldn't be a problem. My mom would be very happy to hear that haha.

Thanks again Susie.

No need to ask the same thing three times in different threads all on the same forum....

Just request KCC to unlock your DS260 and put the new passport info in. If you still have the old passport, take it to the interview as well. Many people get new passports between submitting their DS260 and their interview, it's not a problem at all.
