I think what Peejay is getting at (and please correct me if I am wrong) is that in the past, immigrants at least attempted to assimilate into the American landscape. They learned the customs, the language, the history, and so forth -- and most importantly, the majority of them did it legally. Today, we have tons of immigrants coming across the southern border of the U.S. from Mexico and Central America illegally (that's where our largest immigration problem is, so that's why I'm singling it out; I am not stating that Mexicans and Central Americans are worth any less than anyone else), with no intent of adapting to the United States. They expect those of us here -- Americans who've been born here or legally immigrated -- to learn their language, to learn their customs, to learn their history, and if we don't, it's called racism and we're branded as being exclusionary.

Look, I'm all for immigration. If I wasn't, I wouldn't be here on VJ. But I am for legal immigration. The very fact there is so much illegal immigration (and people who otherwise abuse the system) is why it's so difficult for us to get our loved ones over here to the U.S. in the first place! This country has put so many stops on the process, in order to try and catch the illegals and abusers, that it also targets those who're going by-the-book and following the law.

probably is because i come from Mexico, i don't see this forced assimilation everybody talks about.. almost any job in Mexico needs bilingual people, so the fact that u have to learn another language to get a job is not new to me.. i don't see people forced to eat chimichangas or taquitos for lunch.. and the businesses, well, i don't think they're forced to do business in spanish, they simply want more money.. now.. the government side.. well.. yea i guess its too much to ask to have all govt services in spanish too, but at the same time. it has been great help to me.. so im kinda divided..

about the culture, i don't see anybody being forced to learn spanish, in schools they teach it, because i guess its easier to get a spanish teacher than a french one, but I don't think it's a compulsory course for high school.. and spanish literature, as chicano literature, has been present in the states since a long time ago too

Any doubt this needs to be built?

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Senator Barack Obama
Senate Floor Speech on Public Debt

but what percentage of the hispanic population is legal or illegal? even if the % of legal hispanic population is low, and there are a lot of dropouts, it means that the education system is failing, not the immigration policies..

What about all of the Mexican ladies I see here pregnant who clearly can not afford to have a baby. Who will pay for that Pedroh? I'll give you one guess..

I am just shocked to see so many places in the US have become third world. All it takes is to watch the news from Florida or Texas to see what really goes on down there. The majority of the people living in these new slum areas are Hispanic. Hence the great increase in crime in those regions. I am not saying Hispanic people should not be allowed to come here yet it is a it of a joke that so many are coming here while the level of poverty within their community is rising. The US has enough social problems of it's own let alone be able to take on more and more South Americans.. All this is doing is bringing down the country and putting more pressure on the vanishing American middle class.

Bush should be impeached for allowing this to happen during his watch. This didn't happen overnight, but a huge bulk of this occurred while he was either governor of Texas or President. He is an incompetent and a total disgrace to the offices he has held. Fifty years from now he will be viewed as the failure he is.

The democrats are in charge now so I want to see what they will do with this issue.. They have promised so many changes and now it time to see of they deliver the goods..

Securing the country and it's immediate borders is much more important than terrorists. What good is it to protect a country from terrorists when the country itself is literally falling apart.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.
