My husband and I are filing jointly. I have started inputting everything into TurboTax and it is asking for any medical expenses occurred through the year. Can I input the fees associated with the I-693 form (i.e. doctor visit, lab & x-ray fees) ?

Yes, you can include any medical expense that you paid out of your own pocket.

Great, thank you!

How Much of the Expenses Can You Deduct?

Generally, you can deduct on Schedule A (Form 1040) only the amount of your medical and dental expenses that is more than 10% of your AGI. But if either you or your spouse was born before January 2, 1950, you can deduct the amount of your medical and dental expenses that is more than 7.5% of your AGI.

Example.

You are unmarried and were born after January 2, 1950, and your AGI is $40,000, 10% of which is $4,000. You paid medical expenses of $2,500. You cannot deduct any of your medical expenses because they are not more than 10% of your AGI.

Done with K1, AOS and ROC

Since I'm filing with TurboTax, they work all that out for me (thank goodness!) and as it turns out, we didn't meet that threshold.

I was more concerned with whether the i-693 expenses were legitimate 'claimable' expenses or whether they fell into some weird loophole. I realize this may sound like a dumb question... obviously they're medical expenses, but when you've lived in a country that does not file taxes in this way, you learn to second guess everything!
