Hi All,

racheal&david, I would investigate further into your needing the police documents, I believe you do need them if your cumulative time in China exceeded 12 months. If I were you I'd make absolutely sure that your letter from your employer will work before you walk into the interview.

As far as a 'four-week' expediency agreement goes, this apparently does not apply to China, as many things do not. I called the Chinese Embassy in Los Angeles for advice on how to get the police record, and the woman there told me to 'Just go to China and get it yourself.'. I don't have any reason to believe that any other embassy will be more helpful.

It's looking more and more to me like the only solution in my case is to hire a third party with influence in the Chinese police stations like the one I mentioned above. The more I think about it, the more obvious it is that these absurd restrictions for picking up documents in person are no accident, they're just another way for Chinese to profit through a little palm-greasing when things are impossible for foreigners.

At least get your British fiance to give the embassy in the UK a call. You never know, it might work out.

I am in the process of investigating it further. I have over 12 months but like I said the Chinese do not issue police certificates for temporary visas, in my case the F visa I first got but obviously the 5 months I have with a Z visa I do need to look into. I am unable to put my trust and money in an agency like the one you linked earlier, too many scams with that kind of thing. I am in the process of contacting the US embassy and Chinese embassy here in the UK. Hopefully the US embassy will understand as China isn't very helpful with this sort of thing especially for foreigners no longer in the country.

Understandable, I'm attempting to contact the US embassy in the UK as well to see what they say about it. If you have 12 months then I wouldn't be too stressed. Please let us know if you get any definite answers from the embassy. Thanks!

My fiance now my wife used that same company and at her interview in Manila they accepted the said "No Criminal Record" in short no problem using the company, that is base from our experience. If you decide to avail their service you'll be dealing with Magic Cheng. Goodluck to your journey

Hey, with regards to using this company, I've been reading through their website and it says they acquire the NCR and email a copy all before taking payment. Is this so? I just want to make sure companies like that aren't a scam, there's to many scam companies out there today. My fiancé is particularly cautious with things like this so I just want to be sure. Thanks in advance.

That's correct...like you I am hesitant at first but we don't have much option on how to get "No Criminal Record" without doing it in person. It's more expensive and complicated if we do it on our own. Because you'll be needing interpreter (during your stay in china) that needs to be paid an hour. You can email them for the complete procedure on how to avail their service. They will explain it to you how the process goes. One more thing they send us a copy of the said police report, proof the it's in their hand already and that's the time for them to collect the full payment from you before sending the documents.

Hi, I've just got my background check from China.

According there rules on the one hand ! Yes. they DO NOT give you a paper for background check if your visa was temporary , BUT for PSB only papers are important, they need an official organ that takes responsibility for you whether it's university or school you've worked at. So my advice is

1). email to your school and ask for the paper that you've been the student there from ... till.... ! Make sure that the date on this certificate 学生证明 will be the same as your first entry to China.

2). do the same with the schoole, where you've been employed

3). make copy of your first and last entry to China

I don't know about other cities but in Tianjin they didn't check my visa type, they just need paper from univercity or from employer.

4) I really don't know whether you can or cannot do it in person. China is such a big "bring me the right paper country" that adds more headache for us.

5) you need a form from the local notary office. This form you need for psb (公安局) they fill it in basing on your 学生证明 from univercity and the paper that your employer shuld provide you (don't know how it's in Chinese).

After psb fiils it in, you bring this form back to the notary office. In Tianjin the name of the n fice in Chinese 北方公证处, not sure if it the standart name for all notary offices.

Hi Racheal & David,

As suggested, your case is unusual - with the visa change & timeframes. See what the US Embassy says. Hopefully, you'll get lucky and don't?!?

If you do need the NCR check, then may as well try calling the China Embassy, London and seeing if they can help/advise...

From what I know, to get the check needs someone (a friend/ex-colleague/whoever!) to go to your local PSB with copy of your passport info page, visa, all entry/exit stamps, time period you want checked and previous local address. They run the check. This then needs to be notarised. And then everything needs to be translated into english and certified. It seems to be easier to do this if you're there... very tricky if not.

I've decided to try the 'visainchina' company. Am also uncomfortable about using them (so many dodgy companies in China) and they're also VERY expensive. Apparently, they email me a scan of the NCR before I issue payment, and they send it to me. Lets see... hope it works. Magic Cheng, the founder seems to have quite a strong profile amongst Shanghai Expat Visa Networking Forums. But, as I say... lets see.

If it doesn't work. Then am taking proof of everything have done to try to get it (emails, calls etc...) to the US Embassy.

Good luck! Will post a note if that company does get my NCR, will know in a couple of weeks. But to be honest, the US Embassy must realise how difficult it is?

Hey, I've been in contact with the US embassy they pretty much said if I think I don't need to provide a NCR certificate then I can discuss that with the CO at the time of my interview. Obviously that's not good, enough for me so I'm waiting to hear from them with the possibility of further information. I don't want to turn up at my interview and be denied when I can have everything beforehand and be approved right there. So far no luck with the Chinese embassy. Can't get in touch and with their New Year coming up I probably won't hear anything until after.

As for the visainchina service, I'm glad someone else understands my reluctance to use such a company. But I have at least been in touch with them too, they seem legit but with anything like that you have to be cautious especially with the cost involved, so pleas do let me know what your outcome is.

China is such a black hole sometimes when it comes to getting these kinds of things. Most people have merely said go back and get it. Which is pretty impossible for me to do financially and with my newborn.

Thanks though, I hope you get it sorted :)

I just did this fo Jinan and i'm in HK. I then also helped my friend do one for Jinan as well and she is in London.

You really need to find someone from the city to do it for you. Maybe offer to pay someone from your old job. A police check costs nothing.

So you need to prepare
  • a copy of your passport, visa pages, resident permit pages, ID page.
  • You also need the letter from your employer/school stating you were a good, well behaved person. The letter must be in Chinese and must have the address of the apartment where you lived on it. It also needs the company chop to make it all official.
  • Next you need an Authorization letter to give to the police. Put your fingerprint on it in red ink. Or your chop if you have one. You need to get the name in Chinese and the ID number of the Chinese citizen who is going to go to the Police Station for you and put it on there.
  • The person who goes for you needs to add a copy of their ID.

The take it to the local PSB for where you lived.

Here is mine post-188252-0-18437000-1424092005_thumb.jpg attached, this helped my friend get hers. They wouldn't issue one until they saw they had already done one before.

Then you need to have it taken to a notary office. They need another authorisation letter too. Then they take it for 5 days and translate and notarize it. This costs around 400 ish RMB. Hope this helps.

I sent a PM but here is what I have to put in.

I was under the impression that if you had spent less than a year in a country you didn't need to police check. I had been in China for ten months and was relieved to not have to go through the hoops to get one. I had even called NVC about it. Here is the bad news...

I had my interview in Montreal a little less than two weeks ago. I arrived and everything checked out- EXCEPT for the lack of a Chinese police check. The officer explained that I was approved pending the receipt of my check from China. Apparently the woman at the NVC that told me I wouldn't need it was wrong and I was screwed out of receiving my approval that day. So here I am waiting for the police in China (visainchina is doing the work and has already submitted it to the police) to get things done and Chinese New Year is this week. The update I received this morning said that I will be getting the paperwork at the end of March.

If anyone has something faster for me, PLEASE HELP. I am pretty tired of waiting!

Hi everyone,

I'm in the same boat. I was in Beijing on an F visa for 5ish months in 2010, and then in Hangzhou on an X visa for 7 months in 2013-2014. Do give us an update of how you go Racheal & David. I'm a little unsure about using visainchina because it is so unbelievably expensive, but it might be my only option. The universities I was at in Hangzhou are pretty useless and slow and getting you any kind of documentation unless you are there in person.
