Hello VJ,

I need to get my passport stamped with an I-551 stamp because my one year extension is about to expire on March 6. (Correct me if I'm wrong but the one year extension is ONE YEAR from the date of GC expiration, regardless of NOA date. Therefore my extension expires 3/06.)

I currently live in Orange County, CA however, there aren't any available INFOPASS appointments at my local office. Does anyone know if it's a problem or would I be turned away if I schedule an appointment at a different office….say in Los Angeles County?? Because I'm pretty sure USCIS does NOT accept walk-ins right? :dancing::dancing::dancing: LOL

I'm hoping and praying to get an approval before March but I have to be prepared if it doesn't happen :/

Thanks in advance!!!

If you are still married to your US citizen spouse, you could file for citizenship 90 days before the extension's expiration. Citizenship/naturalization filing FORCES them to adjudicate your case. Is this a possibility for you?

Good luck! :)

Unfortunately this is not a possibility for me since I divorced my US citizen spouse, but thank you for taking the time to respond :)

We had the same problem when we got our first 551 stamp. Had returned the GC due to USCIS error and needed to travel. No appointments in Santa Ana. So, started entering zip codes for L.A., Riverside, etc. Finally found an appointment in Imperial, two hour drive each way but had to have it. When the first 551 was set to expire, got appt in Santa Ana for the day before the expiry date. Have to shop around zip codes if nothing in Santa Ana but, given that your one year is about to expire you should be able to get one in Santa Ana closer to the March 6 date. And yes, no walk ins.Good luck.

  • 4 weeks later...

UPDATE*** Last week I went to my INFOPASS appointment to try to get a I-551 stamp on my passport but the Los Angeles, CA office refused, said they don't have jurisdiction over my city (that is not in LA county) and turned me away. I explained to him and even asked to speak to a supervisor…USCIS is a Federal agency that has jurisdiction over all of U.S. and that my GC expired on 3/5/14 and I needed the stamp so I could keep my job! They said I have to go to my local office (Santa Ana, CA) to get it but I have been trying to get an INFOPASS appointment at my local office (Santa Ana, CA) and haven't had luck getting one!! I have received conflicting responses on whether the ONE YEAR extension is one year from the GC expiration date which would mean today 3/6/15 or one year from NOA Letter, the newest one being 10/15/14…the IO and supervisor even told me to try to do a "walk-in" at my local USCIS office but I reminded them that USCIS does not accept walk-ins!! At this point I'm not sure what to do….someone from HR will be asking me to provide an unexpired document soon and I don't know what to tell them :(
