The answers you got I hope reflect an easy transition through customs. My wife and I are making our first trip back to Ukraine in May with her son, hopefully. We have his interview in March so if nothing gets fouled up, he will have his green card too.

Only time will tell how smoothly this actually works.

She can use her passport from the Ukrain but if it is still within the first 2 years of you being married make sure that you file for a travel permit for her. Until she is a redident without restrictions she will have to do this or they may not let her re-enter the US.

Don't Let It Worry You

This is false. All that is required is the permanent resident card unless you are gone for over a year. If you will be gone for more than 1 year, a reentry permit is needed. The conditional status has absolutely nothing to do with travel.

I have never had or seen many problems with Ukrainian customs, it is Ukrainian passport control where most of your problems can occur. While I am not an advocate of these "VIP" services offered at the airports, I will tell you on my last trip, I traveled back to the US with my fiancee's cousin and she uses "VIP" because it is much less hassle than transiting the normal lines.

YMMV

What about the crazy Ukranian law that says she needs to give up her blue passport, change her name on her red passport, but that happens ony after she gives up her right to own property, gets sworn statements that she doesn't owe money to her last job, parents etc. I just heard some crazy stuff.

Spartacus,

She can travel by plane, train, or automobile. Or boat or motorcycle.

If leaving the country she will need her Ukranian passport, since whe can't get a US one until she becomes a US citizen.

To get back into the country she will need her Green Card.

Yodrak

When my wife has her green card, how does she travel? The passport rules seem to say she must be a citizen. Does she still rely on her Ukranian passport?
