QUESTION ON GETTING A SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER (SSN)

According to the social security number application instructions, it appears K-1 visa holders do not qualify for social security numbers, unless you have work authorization like an EAD or Green Card. Anyone with experience in this?

From Page 3 on the official SS number application form...

"If you check “Legal Alien Not Allowed to Work” or “Other,” you must provide a document from a U.S. Federal, State, or local government agency that explains why you need a Social Security number and that you meet all the requirements for the government benefit. NOTE: Most agencies do not require that you have a Social Security number..."

I will clarify something here. For SSA purposes, the K-1 classification is a legal alien allowed to work...BUT it doesn't mean you are immediately authorized to work with just the SSN. The SSN you receive as a K-1 visa holder has restrictions on it. You will need employment authorization before you can actually work with the SSN.

Which is why when you go to SSA again to change to married name with your EAD, they remove that wording about the work restrictions.

Actually they don't.

The restriction is removed once you have your green card. Having the EAD does not remove the restriction.

she brought her documents required, passport with visa, birth certificate, and I-94 form that we printed online .

we were assuming she would get her SSN in a couple days coz she brought all the docs and the I-94 ..

BUT THE SSN PERSONAL SAID THEY NEED TO CONTACT AND VERIFY HER DOCUMENTS FEDERAL, STATE OR LOCAL OFFICE IN THE UNITED STATES. AND GAVE THIS LETTER .. READ BELOW.....

IS THIS CORRECT ??? OR ANYONE IN THE SAME SITUATION THAT CAN GIVE ME MORE INFO AND TIME FRAME FOR RECEIVING HER SS CARD IN THE MAIL?????

Dear Danica XXXXXXXXX

This is to acknowledge that you applied for social security number on February 2 2015

Before we can issue you a social security number card, we must verify the documents you gave us to show your alien status with the federal, state, or local office in the United States that issued the documents. This may take up to 4 weeks…..

If that office verifies the authenticity of your documents, we will mail you a social security number card. If that office does not verify your documents. You are not eligible for a social security number card and we will inform you this in writing..

This is correct (well for me in Michigan) I ended up waiting about 6 weeks and got sent another one of these letters after the first 4 weeks! Now I tried to change my name on my SS card and I have received this exact letter again and am waiting again for my updated card.

I can't say that they were particularly helpful at the office.
