Farmers face challenges finding love in rural America

WASHINGTON – As a single man, Kaleb Tillman is used to the ribbing he regularly takes from his married friends and family.

At an age when many of his friends are already involved in serious relationships, the 25-year-old corn, soybean and cattle farmer is one of many single people in rural America struggling to overcome their remote locations and unpredictable work schedules on the farm or ranch to meet Mister or Miss Right. In Iowa, 22.7 percent of men and 30.5 percent of women in rural areas have never married, compared with 27.9 percent of males and 20.8 percent of females in the United States.

For Tillman, the nearest place is Essex, a town of 800 people that lacks a stoplight and has one bar, and where it doesn't take long for a single person on the dating scene to bump into the same people. Omaha, the nearest major city, is an hour's drive away — not an insurmountable distance, but few women want to date a guy who is that far away when they can meet someone closer, he said.

"It was a rarity that a female would walk in, and if she did I was probably related to her," said Tillman of his local bar. One night a woman he was talking to encouraged him to meet a nice, spunky friend of hers she thought would be perfect for him: turns out it was his cousin. [...]

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

The safest and fastest methods of hooking up in small towns is to cross-check all of the eligible matches through Ancestry.com before asking them out. :idea:
