George Zimmerman was acquitted of murder in connection with the shooting, but the Justice Department is still investigating whether a civil rights violation took place. Historically, these are incredibly difficult cases for prosecutors to prove and many experts have said that federal charges in the case are unlikely. Holder told Melissa Harris-Perry, that he hopes to have the investigation resolved before he leaves office, which could be in a matter of weeks if congress confirms U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch as his successor.

“I will say there’s a report coming,” Holder told Harris-Perry. “But we will have to wait till it’s actually done and I have a chance to review it. But my hope is to get it done before the time I leave.”

Trayvon’s mother Sybrina Fulton was a guest on Melissa Harris Perry’s show on Saturday and said she looked forward to the Justice Department’s report and some type of closure. “Well, we’ve been waiting over a year to hear something. We’ve been in contact with the Justice Department but we haven’t heard either way,” said Fulton.
