The collecting of Social Security benefits is based upon what you pay into the system. There are specific requirements but in general you have to work at least 40 qualifying quarters (10 years) to be eligible to collect benefits. They also administer the Medicare program. Anyone who is an LPR or citizen can qualify. They don't need to be updated if you obtain a 10 year green card or citizenship. The number is yours for life and all your earnings/eligibility information are stored under that number.

The social security office has NOTHING to do with voting. To vote in elections you must register, there is no "automatic" registering of you to vote. Usually you can do this at the driver's license office or online. If you don't register you don't get to vote. Note that voting in federal elections requires U.S. citizenship but some localities allow LPRs to vote for local officials.

You do not ever need to renew your card. The number is yours for life. The green card is your authorization to work.

Naturalization is not a factor. It doesn't mean anything to your SSN or card.

Thanks for your information.

I agree with you to a length on this. However, there are some benefits like jobs, scholarships and grant that only US citizens can apply for. In cases like this they only ask for your social security number to verify your status. So, if you fail to update the status at the SS office how will they verify if you are a citizen or not?

Social Security is not in charge of keeping citizenship records.

What makes you think citizenship can be verified through Social Security?

Because they always ask for your social security number when applying, so I thought there maybe a link between it and citizenship status. I may be wrong, I'm not sure!
