Question 2. - In the context of the time, were the Crusaders 'extremists'

Question 3 - Why did ISIS launch its attacks

Question 4. - In the context of the present, are ISIS 'extremists'

They aren't the same clearly, and yes Obama has stepped into a mess yet again.

You can certainly say it was inappropriate to the situation and as far as that goes the guy is talking in generalities anyway.

The comparison is valid and is a substantial portion of the RWNJ tropes regarding Muslims being several hundred if not a thousand years behind the times. RWNJ's just say it without pointing out that the reference most closely resembles the old Christian Crusades and the Inquisition eras of Christianity.

A2 - Genocide [perpetrated by the Crusaders] was extremist, no matter the times.
