Why did Obama compare Crusades to Islamic State at prayer breakfast?

At the National Prayer Breakfast on Thursday, President Obama made a reference to Christianity that infuriated some conservatives.

Then the president said this: “And lest we get on our high horse and think this is unique to some other place, remember that during the Crusades and the Inquisition, people committed terrible deeds in the name of Christ. In our home country, slavery and Jim Crow all too often was justified in the name of Christ."

This did not go down well with right-leaning pundits. They noted that Obama had not actually said “Taliban” when he mentioned the school attack or “radical Islam” in the Charlie Hebdo reference.So what was Obama thinking when he mentioned Christianity in this way?

So there you have it. The president’s full remarks are worth reading if you want to make up your own mind. It’s possible he knew they would blow some of his opponents' stacks; it’s possible he’s surprised by the controversy. But controversy there is, manufactured or genuine.

i think of it this way. Banal Barry refuses to work with most Republicans, and since there's a majority in both Houses, he's gonna take each opportunity to shovel sh|t into their ears. This was just another venue, another day, in which he could so do.

or, alternatively, my alternative opinion is that BB's speech writer is a tardo.

The comparison is valid and is a substantial portion of the RWNJ tropes regarding Muslims being several hundred if not a thousand years behind the times. RWNJ's just say it without pointing out that the reference most closely resembles the old Christian Crusades and the Inquisition eras of Christianity.

I see that, also - it just seems that it's sorta 'out of place' at a prayer breakfast meeting, unless he was presenting an agenda to wipe out the extremists in the name of the Christian God.
