I really appreciate your answers. I know, from a personal perspective, I agree it's not very romantic, but we cannot ignore the chance of obtaining a working permission 2-3 months earlier. Unfortunately :( So we would have a court wedding right away and the real ceremony a little later to have if possible friends and families over.

My question was more due to concerns from the legal/USCIS perspective. Thank you very much again

Romantic and USCIS/government in the same sentence is an oxymoron

Why does everyone always say "Good Luck"? Even the USCIS agent I spoke to at their office sait it. Luck should have nothing to do with it. This is a factual issue and every case should be decided by facts. But alas, luck has everything to do with it. Just getting someone who knows what they are talking about is a ####### shoot at best.

It just means best wishes and/or "I can't do anything to help you, you are on your own"

Fiance arrived on May 2, 2014. We were married May 7, 2014. We married so quickly because my husband wanted, like you, to work as quickly as possible. We haven't had problems so far, and my husband is gainfully employed :).

How are you guys getting Bettina's SSN?

For the marriage license, was a SSN requested?

Can you explain me step by step how are you handling things on your end?

Somehow my previous answer wasn't posted. The SSN application is independent of the marriage. You can do it after or before.

This post covers everything, it is not complicated. Check it out! -> http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/405546-ssn-howto/

Hope this helps. David

In addition to what dakobert said, I will cover specifically how we handled everything so far. Betty's POE was Dec 31. Jan 2nd we went to get our marriage license & went to SSA to apply for SS Card. Her SSN was not asked for when we got the marriage license. Well, actually it was but we told them she didn't have one. They were OK with that. All we needed for her to get the marriage license was forms of ID. A passport sufficed for her. I do not recall them even asking for her I-94, but we had it anyway. At the SSA, they did ask for Passport, I-94, & maybe even international birth cert. We had all that stuff. She has her SS Card now. She got it in the mail her 2nd week here in Texas; granted it's in her maiden name.

We mailed in to the local SSA to change her name to married name, but they would not accept the copy of marriage cert that we sent them. They requested we either send them a certified copy or come in and show them the original & then they will change it. However, research on VJ that I did pertaining to this subject yielded varying results. Some people say they will not change it without the EAD or GC. So we will wait to get her name changed until we get her EAD.

On another note, we tried to get her TX ID, but they didn't like anything we brought in. Basically, she couldn't prove 30 days residency. Other than the demoralizing 2 hour wait to accomplish nothing, no harm, no foul. We will take care of that the same day we do her Biometrics, Feb 17. Her DL we also will not apply for until she gets her EAD. But that's only because if you get the DL prior to the EAD, it is only valid through the I-94 date. The DL you get using the EAD is valid for one year. Then we'll renew it to the typical 6-year DL when she gets her GC.

I hope all this info helps.

Nothing "weird." K1 Visa's do away with traditional plans of a ceremony. Many folks have a problem with planning a big traditional ceremony because everything hangs on the waiting for the visa process. We did a courthouse within 48 hours of her arrival - meeting the 90 day rule. One year later, we had a "Blessing Ceremony" in her home country, complete with wedding dress and all. It was great!
