I brought my fiance' (now spouse) over on a K-1 visa and am preparing paperwork for her AoS.

It looks like I file the affidavit as the petitioner (1A)

Although I made enough last year 125% over poverty level (barely) I'm considering adding my father as a sponsor (he's willing) 'just to be sure'.

Although we live at the same address we consider our selves as having a separate house hold. I rent a room.

He could file an I-864A (only to be used if my income is considered to not be enough), or instead it seems like he could file the I-864 (1D) as a joint sponsor instead.

It seems like filing I-864 as a joint sponsor is an agreement between that person and the government and the I-864A is a contract between the sponsor and a household member, but the legal responsibility for that person appears to be the same either way.

If that's the case then why have the I-864A form at all? Why not have each sponsor file the I-864?

Meh ...

Question 1) Do you think it's fine if he files the I-864 instead of the I-864A?

Question 2) Is there an advantage of one over the other that I'm not seeing?

Question 3) My other option is to just file with out him and if they deem I need more money would I get a chance to send in another sponsor's paperwork to back me up?

Thank you in advance :)

hi

they are both equal, but the i864A is if he is combining his income with yours, as household member

if he files the i864 as your joint sponsor, you cannot combine incomes, and his income alone would have to cover his household, himself and your husband
