I am a 34 year old female who lives in Windsor. My boyfriend lives across in Michigan. We've been together for a little over 13 years.

Yes, I know, we should have had this process done YEARS ago.

This may be an odd thing to ask, but for those of us who live in Windsor and are planning on marrying someone over in Michigan why can't we just get the physical examination and the Interview done in Windsor? Or if they want me to go to anyone in Michigan I'll do it.

It's just that I don't drive and I'm currently not working. My boyfriend is currently not able to come over. I also don't have any family in Windsor. So I am kinda stuck between a rock and a hard place.

It would be soooo much easier if there was a location, for those of us who live in cities close to the US border, that we could go to instead of all the way to Toronto and Montreal.

If I could get everything done in Windsor or Michigan, I would go to whoever they would want me to go to.

Can anyone help me with this. It's much appreciated.

I just want to be over in Michigan so we can FINALLY get married.

A visa is issued outside the US to enter the US.

Each Consulate makes its own arrangements for the medical, usually and logically somewhere close.

We know about the K1 visa. It's just that it would be soooo much easier if I could just get everything done in Windsor and/or Michigan. Going to Toronto and Montreal is a lot of traveling and is expensive if you don't drive.

Physical exam has to be done by an immigration doctor within Canada . There are 2 in Toronto and 1 in Montreal. My fiancé and I live 20 minutes apart Sault Ste. Marie Ontario / Sault Ste. Marie Michigan There is an immigration doctor 1 hour from me in Michigan but they said NO it has to be done in Canada so I went to Montreal 4 days before my interview. It also cost me $325 for the exam but , I had it in hand for the interview. There is no way around it . Also if you are in Ontario .. The Montreal embassey is the only one on this side of the country that will do the K1 visa interview so you are going to have to travel there anyway to get your K1 visa interview approval. I just got my K1 visa approved last Friday .

Thanks Marebear. Do you think it would be easier to get the examination done in Montreal as apposed to doing it in Toronto? I have family that lives in Kanata, so I could always see if they could take me to Montreal for the examination and the interview. Kinda two birds with one stone.

How long after the examination is the interview usually?

If there is anything you can share with me that would be helpful that would be great.

We still have yet to get all the paperwork filled out, but we're getting things together.

Thanks.

Once you have your interview date, they can schedule your medical a few days before so you don't have to make 2 trips. They can't do it any closer to the interview because it takes a few days to get the results (time varies according to which doctor you go to).

Lot of things can be easier, lol Keep in mind some provinces have NO approved doctors......Best of luck

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

It does suck to have to travel. They used to have more doctors in Ontario years ago.

This.

One doctor for all of Western Canada. Because the embassy only schedules interviews on Tuesdays, it means at least five days in Vancouver.

The U.S. government doesn't give a rat's rump about making anyone's life easier.

I would think it is NOT a USA govt issue....but a Cdn doctor issue......Not worth their time....they are busy enough and do not need the extra hassles for not enough $$$$$

I know it's frustrating as hell.

I live in Alberta and while there are no US approved doctors here, I know there are many doctors here that do immigration medicals for other countries, so you'd think the US would allow them to do the medicals for the US as well. But then again, government procedures don't make any sense.

I will have to got to either Surrey BC or Montreal for my medical and will have to go to Montreal for my interview. It is definitely a hit to the wallet for sure.

That's ridiculous SuzieQ. They really should have smaller government buildings for people who live close to the border. Just to make things easier. I'd hate to be out there and have to fly out to Montreal and back.

It's definitely something I would complain about. If you live near a bordering US city, then you can get everything done between the Canadian city you live in and the US you live by.

I wonder if there is someone who I could complain about this to.

The bigger issue is actually on the southern border, you have to use the Consulate in Ciudad Juarez which is right in the area controlled by drug gangs.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

I went crazy trying to figure out the cheapest way to do this. Cuz I'm 1500 klilomiters from Montreal and 700 from Toronto ...I figured the cheapest way was to do both at once. First you have to book your interview at the embassey before you do anything else . Once you have that date I would suggest you take the via rail or a bus to Montreal 4 or 5 days before your interview to get the physical done. Then take the train or bus to kanata and stay with family while you wait . The day before the interview go back to Montreal pick up the package from the physical get a room for 1 night and go to your interview the next morning. I took the via rail to my sisters in brockville ($35 return) while I waited for the interview

I would open a business to get $265 for a 20-minute exam.
