tax filing guidance needed (split topic)

I'm having an issue with this as well this year. We were just married last year and I was totally unaware that my spouse had to get an ITIN# until now when it's time to file. Our problem is he's a Merchant Marine and currently out to sea. He isn't expected to return until March or April - even possibly after the tax deadline of April 15th. His passport is with him on the ship. Add to that, we are in the final stages of NVC, with an expectation of an early May interview (hopefully if no checklists). There's no way we have time to get a certified copy of his passport in time, nor would I even consider having him mail his passport to me to send to the IRS with our interview date looming closer. As mentioned above, is it ok to file MFS, print out the form, write in NRA, and later file an amended return? I just wasn't sure - is this an OK thing to do? Any help and guidance appreciated!

And its completely alright for you to seek information from the same thread which is started (which will also reduce number of post)

Prepare tax return, either way, if taxes are owned -pay them and file extension.

You will have until October 15 to file taxes, and if your spouse is supposed to be here by the , you'll have the SSN at the time of filling
