So we've made it to the NVC stage and even though we are still waiting for our case number I have these on going doubts (to be honest since day 1) about this part. I have a payment arrangement with the IRS for back taxes... Since I'll be sponsoring my husband I'll be filling out the affidavit of support for him. I owe taxes for the past few years and from what I'm told I'll need the last 3 years of taxes. I've made more than poverty level just didn't pay enough taxes. Sooo I guess what it comes down to is am I tripping for no reason or I'm SOL till it's all paid off? Anyone with feed back will be awesome to hear from your experiences or what you've heard out there.

I've read it several times on the board about people owing back taxes. It doesn't matter. The DOS doesn't care if you owe back taxes, just if you make above the poverty line or have a joint sponsor who does. They don't care if you owe back child support, money to a loan shark, or spend every dollar at the casino. LOL Just make over the poverty guidelines, either via a current job or assets, or have a joint sponsor who meets those requirements. If you're feeling unsure about your poverty guidelines level because the IRS is garnishing your wages, then by all means, get a joint sponsor.

If you are on a repayment plan it should be ok. Without a repayment plan they have been known to subtract the amount owed from your yearly income. The only debt that gets you in trouble is stuff that shows up against your taxes ( owed taxes and child support ) They don't care about personal indebtedness.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.
