10/9/2015 Interview

Posted (edited)

Hello! Green Card approved!

Today was my interview. It was scheduled for 9:15am and we had to drive from Rockville to Baltimore. It usually is a 40 minutes drive, but to avoid/manage the rush hour we left home at 7am. At 8:15 we had already got our waiting number, Because it was early, the office was kind of empty. At 8:30 we were with the officer. He told us the interview was being recorded; requested my husband's ID and my ID and Passport; we sworn to say the truth; and he explained that the interview would consist on 3 parts: 1) relationship history 2)I-130 petition overview 3) I-485 petition overview.

Part 1- Both us answering, he was alternating to whom he was directing the questions, but told us that we both could answer.

- How did you meet?

-When did you get romantically involved?

-In which language did you communicate?(because we met online, in a language learning website)

-When did you decide to get married?

-Who came to your wedding? (He was looking at the pictures we had submitted)

-You arrived in a student visa. Where and what were you studying?

-What are your plans?(professional plans, I think he asked because I left my very stable 15 years career back in Brazil and I had a long list of work for the last 5 years )

Part 2- I was asked about my husband application

- he basically asked everything that was in the forms I-130 and G-325 (Name, telephone, parents name, address, job position).

Part 3- My husband was asked about my application

- he selected questions regarding family, identification and work. Confirmed my address with him.

- He went with me through the questions in section 3.C (I-485)

- He asked whether any of us had been married before or had children (adopted or natural )out of the US.

The interview was really smooth, the officer didn't request any additional evidence (and I had prepared a binder with all the items they listed in the notification letter- basically the copy of the whole application). He told us the government had said we had enough money, that I had all the documents correctly, therefore, my application had been approved and the card should arrive at maximum in 45 days.

At 10:15 I received an email updating the Application status for "card being produced".

We didn't study or prepared for the interview and I got so surprised my husband knew my parents' full names, that I said: - I didn't know you knew this!

I'm happy, but overall alleviated! It is a stressfull process.

I'll let you guys know when I receive the actual document.

We made our first ever phone call to USCIS today to try to get something started to find out what is the delay in our case.

We are now into our 8th month since initial filing.

I did a search here and found there were four couples who were processed through Pittsburgh for AOS in 4 months or less in the past year.

The official website shows Pittsburgh is processing applications filed in August 2014; but I know that is not true because 3 of the 4 I found filed long after August 2014 and have already gotten Green Cards in February, March and April of 2015.

Anyway, the Tier One person agreed to fill out a Service Request for us.

My extensive reading here gave idea that without filing of Service Request, nothing really happens.

And, they try to avoid filling out Service Request, so we were happy they did so for us.

We got a confirmation number and statement that we should hear something in 5-15 days.

If not, we can call back with our confirmation number, etc.

No guarantee that this will speed anything up, but I have read accounts here that even when you get response that they can do nothing for you; you suddenly do get Interview Appointment date, etc.

I think they want to tell you that a phone call or even a Service Request won't help; because they don't want the word to get spread around that it will help . . . and then get an increased avalanche of phone calls.

Also, I had read that the best way to proceed after you dial the number . . . is to give 'no responses' in terms of punching numbers for menu selections. Under that procedure, you were supposed to be answered directly by a real person.

Things have changed in that respect. If you don't choose from menu items . . . the entire menu (very, very long) is read to you twice again for a total of three times. Then, you are disconnected.

So, on our next try, I chose some menu items.

And, we were pleasantly surprised that someone answered within 20 seconds or so.

The person was very pleasant and willing to help.

I have read here that the US citizen can call on their own to check all of this out.

But not true. They asked if the foreign applicant were on the phone also, wanted her to state her name, and state that she gave her husband permission to do all the talking on her behalf.
