I am just beginning the process and I am educating myself as much as I can. I love this site.

But my question today may be a bit general. I was talking to someone today who made a good point and I am concerned. I have been telling my fiance that once we get married, she will have health insurance as I can add her on my plan as a qualifying event. But as she will not have a SS# for a while after we apply to change her status (B2), will I be able to add her onto my plan? My understanding is that without a number, you will not be able to be on a group health plan. Did I miss something?

Thanks and I did search for this but could not find an answer. Thanks again!!!

I think most health plans you have a certain amount of days after a qualifying event to change I am not sure how much time that is. Hopefully that will be enough time for you to get what you need to put her on your plan.

Also you might want to call the company that provides your insurance as they could probably be more helpful

One gets 30 days after the qualifying event. I am fairly certain that we will not have much by then other than our marriage certificate.

I will call my company but I am not optimistic that without a SS number one can enroll on the plan. And since open enrollment won't be until the end of the year, it could be an issue.

We were able to do it without the SSN at my previous company. I told our company benefits person the situation and that it may take a month to get the card. Also I gave them a copy of our marriage certificate. This was enough to get the benefits started and I followed up after we got the card.

We were also able to enroll in insurance without any issue. I just had to explain my situation and they wanted proof of our marriage so we provided our marriage certificate. The insurance told me whenever I get her ITIN or SSN number to update them.

I thought as I started this topic, I would tell what happened. It was just about exactly as described. I went to my HR and they informed me they would allow for her to be added as an exception. But I had to get them the SS# as soon as I have it. Fair deal.

Sorry for the panic but perhaps this will help someone who is a high strung as I am. :) Good luck all!

I just got married last month and all I needed to put my wife on my health plan was our marriage certificate. Ask your HR department what is required, but I would suspect that only a marriage license is required. Good luck to you both.
