Oregon strippers lobby for better work conditions

Tired of watching well-meaning strangers impose their own visions for improving the plight of the dancer, some of Portland's seasoned strippers are working directly with state lawmakers and professional lobbyists.

Around the country, strippers have stepped up their fight for better working conditions. Some are suing. Others have filed complaints with state regulators. A handful have unionized. But the effort in Oregon to work directly with the Legislature — with the support of lobbyists — is unique.

"The hardest part about being a stripper is battling the stigma that we are victims that need help from outsiders," said Elle Stanger, a stripper who's been active in the movement. "It doesn't matter if you work in education, clergy, any kind of blue collar work — the people who do the work know what the work environment needs."

Been to Oregon quite a few times. The thing that sticks out in my mind is all the white Heroin addicts in downtown Portland begging for change. I did win $500 in the lottery there once. Thankfully I made it to my car without being robbed by one of the aforemention dope fiends.

I have been to Oregon, but didn't check out the strippers. I was with wife. It is a strange state. even coming from California. Stepford Wives comes to mind.

Funny how we been to the same place and see different things. The only reoccurring theme going though my mind while visiting Portland was, I would sure hate to be here when the big one comes.

heroin addicts are normally pretty easy to get away from. if you can't run, normally taking your index finger and gently nudging a heroin bum any where affecting their center of balance will cause them to fall over - buying precious time for escape. but maybe portland has superstrength heroin addicts. i've never been.

Thanks for the tip. Kicking them in the face seemed to make them angry. Next time I'll try your fingertip method. I tried watching Portlandia. I think I made it through 5 episodes before I bailed. I gave it about as long as I did Weeds.

The Columbia is pretty amazing, and the state is not at all overpopulated, with plenty of water, and good roads. But, it is Hicksville, even in Portland.

Chances are I would never run in to a stripper in the U.S. I only go to strip clubs if I can rent them for sexual favors for the night, and unfortunately they don't have those kind of strip clubs in the U.S. I'd bet if they did have them here, they would be grossly over priced and the women would be low quality.

I drove from Portland to Seattle once. That was kinda cool. Driving by Mt. St. Helen and all that. That river is huge.
