If somebody was working abroad in 2014 and let's say became a LPR in Sep 2014 came to the US for 2 weeks and went back to the foreign country to work does the person have to file a return? I guess yes Dual status but what if he made less then the filing $10,150 requirement since became LPR?

11/15/2015 - sent AOS package filing concurrently from B2 overstayed 4 years

11/17/2015 - delivered

11/23/2015 - eNotices received, checks cashed

11/30/2015 - received 3 NOAs by mail

12/14/2015 - received biometrics appt letter for 12/21/2015

12/15/2015 - early walk-in biometrics complete

01/31/2016 - submitted an inquiry about the status of EAD

02/01/2016 - the service request has been assigned to an officer for response and completed

02/05/2016 - received a response "Your case is currently under review. You should receive a decision or notice of other action shortly."

02/08/2016 - case updated I-765 Approved on 02/04/2016, received NOA in mail

02/10/2016 - case updated EAD card was mailed on 02/09/2016

02/11/2016 - case updated Interview Scheduled for 03/17/2016

02/12/2016 - received EAD card by mail, applied for SSN

02/13/2016 - received interview notice in mail

03/04/2016 - received Social Security Card

03/17/2016 - interview APPROVED!

03/21/2016 - case updated for I-485 - New Card Is Being Produced

03/22/2016 - case updated for I-485 and I-130 - Case Was Approved

03/24/2016 - case updated for I-485 - Card Was Mailed To Me

03/26/2016 - received Welcome to the United States Letter

Doesn't matter how much you made in US, it matters how much you in general. If you're overall earning regardless of where you worked exceeded minimum - then yes - you have to file a return. It isn't really that much work, you likely won't have to pay taxes on your polish earning if you already paid and it's better to do it then regret later...

Just to give you an idea - N-400 (if you want to naturalize in the future) asks "Have you _ever_ failed to file a tax return....".

Right kzielu. Probably I'll have to file it. Somebody gave me wrong info before. Not many CPAs know about it. I looked online and on the irs web when I started going through N400 questions I realized that I should file a return. Could you advice me which forms should I use? I'm freaking out a little now :(

Right kzielu. Probably I'll have to file it. Somebody gave me wrong info before. Not many CPAs know about it. No need to freak out, still a lot of time till April 15th. I personally in my first year (and all subsequent ones - but then I had only US income) used Turbotax. Basic Federal return form is 1040, 2555 is for reporting foreign earned income.

There were some decent guides here on VJ that I had bookmarked, pasted below - they're quite old but worked at the time.
