I will second "LINE". Have used it for many months and works well depending on the strength of the signal. Voice or vid call free. Also send photos, smileys, etc.

Also very glad just a couple more weeks and I won't have to use it anymore.

We both have iPhones and use "FaceTime Audio Calls" to chat as if we were on the phone, and whatsapp to send pictures and chat.

If no iPhone, I hear Tango is good for talking on the phone.

I recommend Kakao Talk. If you guys have wifi, you can call her for free, send photos, video, voice note, and messages. But no video chatting... People in Korea use this app a lot, I call my family with this app, and some of my american friends use this app. There is also a PC version. http://www.kakao.com/talk/

WeChat is another free app that is good...It has Video calling, Voice calling, Walkie Talkie, Texting, send pics etc.

The walkie talkie feature is nice because you can talk back and forth here and there, like you would witha walkie-talkie, without having to be connected the whole time in ongoing call.
