I had a couple of questions that I'd really appreciate any help with:

1. My company filed for my H1-B visa in 2013 and it got approved on 01/14. I was told by the immigration attorneys that I would need to go to my home country, Belize, in order to get the stamp in my passport. Is this a necessity?

2. I was thinking about moving to North Carolina with my boyfriend. I'm unsure of whether I can quit my job with the company that filed for me, in order to find a job in North Carolina. If i quit my job, will they cancel my visa? If i'm thinking about moving, would i need to find a job over in North Carolina and have them file for me before i quit my job?

3. I've been in the US for three years and I'm thinking about the next step for me. My brother told me that I'd eventually be able to file for a green card myself. What's the process to start filling for a green card?

Thank you!

What is your current status in the US?

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

1. It's not a necessity if you stay in the country, but if you leave you need to go to Belize to get the stamp to get back in to the US.

2. They will cancel your visa if you quit and you'll be immediately out of status. If you want to move, you need to find a new employer to sponsor your petition before you quit.

3. You can't file for a green card on your own unless you marry a USC or LPR, or unless you qualify for some specialty visas based on very unique abilities. Your employer may apply for a green card for you, but that takes years and you can't quit your job in the meantime.

You adjusted status whilst you were in the US to H1b?

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

There is no process, can't just file for yourself because you want to or because you have been here for few years on a work visa. Unless you find an employer willing to file for you (or marry US citizen), have to go home once you're done with H-1B.
