Hi Suki

How long does it take to get SS after entry to US?

Currently, there seems to be a real hit-and-miss with Social Security numbers if you check the box on the DS-260. What needs to happen is that at your POE, the officer (usually at the secondary desk) needs to check a box on the screen for your information to be sent to the Social Security Office for processing. This is not always happening. It did not happen with us (at JFK), even though we specifically reminded them to check the box. (The officer told us to go to the local office!) Based on what I've seen lately, it only happens correctly about 50% of the time.

My advice is to go to your local Social Security office about 2 weeks after POE and double-check to see if the number is in process. We went 9 days after POE, and found out that the POE had NOT submitted the data. You cannot call the SSN help line. You must go in personally.

So my spouse applied right then and there, and she had her SS Card in the mail in 4 days.

Please note - some Social Security offices do not understand the rules - and you may have to ask for a supervisor. The visa "foil" in your passport, in conjunction with the stamp you get at POE, is your legal proof that you are allowed to apply for a Social Security number. Don't let them tell you that you have to have your official "Green Card" before you can apply for a SSN!

Best of luck!

Visa APPROVED on February 26th and since yesterday, CEAC portal already says ISSUED. So I just want to thank VJ family for all the support.

One thing I am concerned about is, Consular officer, gave me a yellow slip on which it was written your visa is approved but she forgot to give me payment slip of 165 dollars(USCIS Immigrant Fee handout). So I asked a helper there to go to officer and enquire about that slip. The officer checked my file and told, my slip isn't there, so she put a blue sticky note (my case number written on it) on that yellow paper and told I would get it along my visa.. I am little worried about that payment slip now, wondering if this may cause any further delays. Has anybody else experienced this?
