submitting documents to NVC

I am petitioning for my wife and we are ready to submit our documents to the NVC. We have a coversheet from the NVC which has a checklist of documents. For each document that we enclose, we must check the box, and the documents must be enclosed in the order given in the checklist. The coversheet looks like below.

In section 2 (financial documents for AOS) we must enclose proof of relationship. This would be our marriage certificate. In section 3 (supporting documents for the IV application), we must enclose our marriage certificate. So my question is....

Should we enclose the marriage certificate twice? That would make sense if we're sending documents for two different departments-- finance and IV.

If we should enclose the marriage certificate only once, then after we check the box in section 2 for proof of relationship, should we check the box again in section 3 for marriage certificate, even though no document will occur there in that order?

If I look at the link you provided it seems like you only need proof of relationship when filing the I-864a, a household member.

So I should submit the marriage certificate twice?

No, the marriage certificate is not needed for the AOS package. The only time proof of relationship is needed in such a circumstance is if you were combining income with a household member.

Oh... thank you, that was my question.

Thank you... you told me the same thing... but I somehow failed to understand.

When sending our documents to the NVC, we must put them in the order indicated on the coversheet. The photos come somewhere in the middle of the order. Since photos are small, how do we attach them in between the other pages there in a way that they don't get lost? Put them in an envelope?

You can put it in a ziplock bag.

Make sure to put case # at the back of each picture.

If you do not wish to write on the document itself, you can write the case number on a Post-It note and affix that to the upper right corner of the document.

Please help... I'm in the final stages of preparing my documents to send to the NVC and I have a few final questions..

1. The AOS requires me to include tax documentation for my most recent tax year... the most recent tax year was the calendar year 2014, but I haven't filed taxes yet because that is due in April. So am I OK in just giving documentation for the taxes I paid for the 2013 calendar year (filed in 2014)?

2. NVC keeps changing it's system so this is a question for people who have submitted documents not long ago. I have a coversheet with a barcode and checklist which is supposed to be the first page when I send my documents. Is this the ONLY coversheet I need? The rest will just be my documents right? I'm confused because when I go to the portal where I paid my AOS and IV fees, I can still download an AOS coversheet and a IV coversheet. Both have barcodes and no checklists. They say scary stuff like, if "You MUST RETURN THIS COVER SHEET with the Petitioner's completed forms and supporting documents. Failure to do so will delay your visa(s)." and then at the bottom they give an address to send to and its ATTN: CMR. Since the current address to send to is ATTN: DR, I guess this scary cover sheet is outdated and I don't need it, right? Still, it's pretty confusing that it can still be downloaded.

3. I live abroad but still maintain US domicile. So for the AOS, I have to attach an explanation of my US domicile. I did that, but I don't know where in the order of documents this goes. The checklist says that I must put documents in the order listed, but there's no thing called "proof of US domicile". Should I put it at the end of all the documents, where it says "4. Other Documents"? But then it would get separated from the AOS documents. Or should I put it with "Proof of US Status", which is one of the items for AOS. I know that proof of US Status refers to proof of US citizenship or permanent residency, but I can also put proof of US domicile here?

Answers:

  1. 2014 taxes will not be expected until after April 15th.
  2. I'll defer to others.
  3. Put it at the end of you AOS package, that way it remains with the applicable package.

Are you sure I can just put the "proof of domicile" at the end of the AOS documents? Because here is what the coversheet which NVC uses these days looks like... as you can see I have to follow the order in the checklist, but there's no item called "proof of us domicile".... I'm very confused about where to put it.
