Is everyone on this thread on K1 visas then?

Most are, but it's not exclusively for K1 applicants and there are some CR1 filers on here as well. There just seem to be fewer of them. There is another update thread which is more recent, but this one covers the length of the process better because a fair number of people posting on this thread have already gone through the interview and POE stage, whereas on the other thread, none of us have had our interview yet. Just join in wherever it seems appropriate to ask a question or add your experience. The UK sub forum has a nice bunch, all round :)

ooff...seeing the $1070 go out of the bank account for AOS was rough!!

Got a phone with Verizon...$400 deposit due to no credit history (husband is on his family's plan for now as a birthday gift) + $150 for the phone (with hopefully a $50 rebate) + $60 for month + $46 for activation fee + taxes = Shana feeling very ripped off right now. Phones in England were so simple!!

I get the $400 back after 6 months + building credit is important. The activation fee did suck though, but as far as I can tell with MPCS I needed a phone beforehand, which I didn't have. I love my new phone! :D Good thing I have a lot of savings!

Yeah I saw their cell phone list, the one I have now was $450 so I'm holding on to the hope that after a while getting the deposit back will be worth going with Verizon. I will raise hell to get it back if not. :) Building credit is key for us since husband has none after living abroad for so long...doll.

Credit cards are going to be our next fun adventure...woohoo...

I feel you there, and you can also go to your bank and ask them for a credit building credit card which is only a temporary credit card they will issue until you have built up some credit history. Around 3-6 months

But I totally understand the importance of credit building. There's also a great guide on expats website that's full of helpful tips if you needed any.

also if you had an American Express credit card in the UK they will honour your credit history with them too.

Thanks! Something to consider.

I didn't have any credit cards in the UK...I always sought to avoid them after seeing how much debt people would get themselves into, especially at Uni.

Yeah I used to be like that. Plus at that time I never really needed credit cards as back then as I was more a saver than a spender. Wow how times change lol now I'm like the credit card queen in my family. But I'm very good with them. I was so happy to find out the American Express would do that for me.

I'm great with paying bills on time and I'm an excellent saver - it's a shame that savings aren't taken into consideration!! Plus paying my own rent/utility bills while I lived in Japan counts for nothing too...grrr. Ah well, it's just another fact of life.

Lol yeah there should be a worldwide credit history for us all.

I've got atleast 8 months to save so that's plenty of time for us.

Ive moved back into the nest so all I have to pay for now is food and telephone bill. Rest of my money going into a pot.

Il start next week tho hahahaha
