So I found out the company my father worked for just closed it's doors yesterday so now he is effectively unemployed.

Obviously this is having a pretty big impact on my family, and one of the impacts is that without a job, he can no longer be a joint sponsor for my Fiance when we do AOS.

From what I remember though, as long as he is able to find employment again that is above the threshold, we should still be okay? There isn't a required amount of time for him to have held the job?

Sorry I feel like this is a question that was so obvious to me, but right now I am still sorta in shock and my brain isn't functioning fully, so I thought I would ask and try to calm my nerves..

I'm sorry to hear this, I remember when my own dad was made redundant after the company he worked for for 20 years shut down (anyone remember good ol' Woolworths?). It'll be a stressful time for your family, hang in there and be there for your father. He'll probably be feeling very vulnerable right now so do your best to add to his strength.

I believe you can have multiple joint sponsors, so it wouldn't be down to your dad alone to reach the poverty threshold, but a number of people (not sure if there's a max though). It also doesn't have to be a family member as far as I'm aware, they are signing a legal document so they would be held responsible for your fiance, but if there's anyone in your life who would help then that's an option.

If your father is able to secure a job, they do require 2 months worth of pay stubs - so the minimum time limit might be 2 months.

Additional post (sorry, time ran out to edit): I'm skimming the I-864 instruction page now and you can have joint sponsors. Evidence is

"A copy of your individual Federal income tax return, including W-2s for the most recent tax year, or a statement and/or evidence describing why you were not required to file. Also include a copy of each and every Form 1099, Schedule, and any other evidence of reported income. You may submit this information for the most recent three tax years, pay stubs from the most recent six months, and/or a letter from your employer if you believe any of these items will help you qualify."

Looking at my AOS cover letter my father-in-law submitted the tax return for the recent tax year (not 3 years worth!) and a letter from his employer. Perhaps your dad would be fine with last years tax return and a letter from a new employer stating his new annual income?

You can't have multiple joint sponsors. One sponsor must qualify. Exception is the one joint sponsor can add the income of a relative who lives in the same house. Like Dad+Mom's income. Or Dad+Grandma (if Grandma lives at the same address). In that situation, the family member whose income is used will fill out an I-864A which is like giving their permission for Dad to use their income on his I-864.

But if Dad has an employer letter stating he earns over the poverty level, then they will consider it as proof. There is no requirement stating you have to have held the job a certain length of time.

Hi Everyone,

Had my visa approved today! I got there early but they let me in anyway, so I was out less than an hour after my scheduled appointment time!

Thanks to all who have posted advice here, I have been reading for a long time and it has helped such a lot.

Medical is fine, just make sure you have all your vaccinations done so you don't pay an arm and a leg to get them done there.

Okay that is what I thought, I just couldn't really recall the specific policy on it at the moment.

Worse thing is that I will have to find another joint sponsor.

Excellent!! Miyazaki is hands down one of my favourite directors. The Ghibli museum in Tokyo is one of my favourite places, if you're ever in Tokyo you'd love it, especially the gift shop!
