Hey, y'all! My husband and I are going to New York City for the weekend (arriving Fri. morning, leaving Sun. morning). I've been to NYC a couple of times, so I have a general idea of some good places to go, but my husband has never been and has always dreamed of going, so I was hoping to create the perfect itinerary for the weekend, in order to make it really special.

This first trip, I don't think he cares that much about going to museums, broadway plays and the like; he's more concerned with seeing the sights and hearing the sounds of New York.

We're staying right between Times Square and the Theater District, so we'll be close to some good stuff. Is there anything going on this weekend that we shouldn't miss? I think we'll hit Soho and Greenwich village for some shopping, and then one evening there's a North African restaurant on the Lower East Side I think we'll go to. I want to go through Chinatown, and get some good New York pizza in Little Italy, and go by Ground Zero (and, of course, hit Century 21 on the way back).

Any other suggestions from anyone? It's been 3 years or so since I've been, so I don't know if there's some really cool new stuff I shouldn't miss.

Also, I've never ridden the NYC subways really late at night (at say, 3 a.m.). Do they run that late? Is it pretty safe that late at night, or should we take a taxi?

Thanks for any info!

The subway runs 24/7 and is 100% safe.

Your plan sounds good otherwise -- good luck!

Here is a link that is currently being advertised on tv for visiting New York:

The Big Apple is a great place to visit! Maybe you can be a 'target' audience at one of the tv screenings - we did that:-) and it would be a great way to get out of the cold. Enjoy!

I just found out there are supposed to be snow showers on Saturday. We are going to freeze!

Thanks for the tip on Lombardi's. We'll have to check it out!

As for the North African restaurant I'm looking at, it's called Nomad, and it's on the Lower East Side. The website looks really cool.

Thanks everyone!

Oh...you're in for a nice time !! You REALLY have to get downtown to China Town !

There is a REALLY great Vietnamese restaurant there that the little Mr. and I frequent on the weekends. It's called Thai Son. The name sounds Thai-but it's down home VN all the way ! My friend's mom used to be the chef.

It's on Baxter right off of Canal. You can hop the A train downtown to Canal-walk 2 blocks-make a right on West Broadway and walk about 6 more to Baxter. Cross the street, and it's the 2nd restaurant on the block....Or, you can take a taxi if it's too cold to walk. Food there is EXCELLENT. The Pho is fresh & fantastic ! It'll run you between $30and $40 for both of you for starters, a main course and drinks !!

Also, a few blocks down is Ferrara's in Little Italy. It's a dessert place which has the most AMAZING authentic Spumoni !!!

And, yeah-the subway runs all night and is safe-despite the fact that some downtown stations are a bit old & dirty...

Have a GRAND time !

One place you should absolutly g is the statute of liberty. Since tey remodelledit there is a usuem in the pedestal about imigrants. Short movies, pictures history and the like. It will absolutely make you so proud of your own ancestor and show him what it was like for them. I know for me it wasomewhat emotional.

It is going to be cold so yo options are limited.

Bring him down to Little Italy/Chinatown and just walk around; from there, you can walk to The Village. It is ridiculously cold here right now (though it's supposed to warm SLIGHTLY by the end of the week) so really... bring heavy clothes/hats/gloves/scarves, etc or you will freeze. The subways are good but some lines are safer than others, though they're all pretty safe within Manhattan itself; they have different types of metrocards and you might want to see if they offer something like 1 day unlimited passes if you think you will be taking the trains and buses a lot. You can get the metrocards in all subway stations and you will need some kind of metrocard if you plan to use the trans. system at all, even if you just put $20 on one. If you can bear the cold though, it's better to walk, esp. if your husband wants to get a feeling for the sights and sounds of the city.

Have a nice time. But it is SOoooOOOooooO cold here, so be forewarned!
