Ours is horrible. Like $160. I think it's the old furnace from 1974. It's a miracle it's still working to be honest. I want to get better insulation in the ceiling (and maybe the wall to the garage?) next year and a new furnace.

But that is gas and power bill.

That isn't bad if it includes your electric. Electric is about 90/month for us. Expensive because the town provides it.

I wanted to go into the big town early Sunday, but thankfully I remembered ND is weird and stores don't open until noon.

I've been watching this interesting show out of the UK called "Grand Designs" about people who are building interesting houses or renovating old ones. It has made me realize I don't really want to build my own house because it is like oops we are 100000 GBP over budget or 500000 GBP over budget pretty much every episode.

Almost every renovation show I ever see is like that. OOPS over budget. Heck when my ex and I built our house, we went over budget. But we did some major changes like a 6' bathtub instead of a 5' and good quality tile vs plastic surround. But it wasn't horrible. I wish we'd gotten the basement done at the same time. It was funny because it took us like a year to get the backyard done (fence on one side only still) and then he put it up for sale! Now his GF is hopefully moving to the same town. Currently she lives about 4 hours away currently so they drive back and forth each weekend... he actually said he felt bad I had to do the long distance relationship so much now that he had a little taste... lol I wonder if he won't end up putting up the current house and they'll go house shopping together though. I know he is the type of person who would rather buy something that has everything he wants, than do any changes to something he has, but he likely wouldn't build again. I'd be more than happy to build my own house and have everything I want in it the first time.

Bathrooms aren't that expensive, especially if you don't get the absolute highest end of things. Our bathroom reno (which hopefully will be done this month) cost about $3000. When labor is free, stuff is cheaper.

I'm more worried about the foundation being double the price or something.

My husband really wants to build our own house in a few years. :(

Oh trust me, there were expensive tiles in that bathroom. We had heated floors installed in the basement. More expensive fixtures etc... Bascially things that look nicer and so go over the "basic" house budget. He didn't bother putting in hardwood or granite etc... that stuff was obviously more expensive, but changing a wall in the floor plan took a little more money than you think it does. It's not load bearing so it shouldn't, but anytime you change anything with a builder, especially a smaller builder who does things right vs a large builder who just slaps sh!t together, it costs you money. But in the end it was worth it. I wish my current bathroom was bigger. Heck I'd lose the walk in closet to have a bigger bathroom.

We didn't do it ourselves obviously. I was pregnant from 6-9 months during the build from start to finish, and he never fixed anything except what he knew how to do (install water softeners and RO systems.)

Yeah, we didn't want to out-price our house so our wall tile was $4.30/sq ft and the floor tile is only $1.68/sq ft. Most people around here just put down vinyl, so we've already moved it up a notch.

Upsides to a 75k house.

I'm still not happy with this house. I've grown out of it....

Not gonna build again. Easier to buy existing and alter.

Do you guys just need more space? Do you have any yard?
