property prices here are crazy and constantly rising. a friend of ours who lives in minnesota just bought a 1 bedroom house for 19K...but he has to drive 20 minutes to get to a gas station

property prices in singapore are much, much worse. :\

Yeah, we looked at a few houses in the 30-45k range, but the renovation costs to get them to be the right fit, were more than the difference. We've got 3 gas stations, a grocery store, a library, a hospital, 2 hardware stores, etc. all within 0.5 miles. I couldn't live somewhere more rural than that.

Btw, no way in h-ell are you gonna be in this condo for 30 years.

It is a good starter property though.

1- you guys gotta see where my buddy is in the Alleghenies......

2- yes it is. But she thinks it's the house to die in, and is not. It's a house to live in, for the time being. Chances are, she'll be there no more than 5-10 years.

thats true.

my parents have lived in their house over 30 years. i would like that.

Can't compare. Different place, different time.....

You have options here. Lots of it.

Look at the house I was looking at in Pound Ridge. It cost pretty much the same as the house I'm living in. Yet the houses are far different.

They don't have options like that in Chingapore.....

More so, you'll outgrow this place.

I'm going to use a hypothetical situation.

Let's say this condo cost twice your salary. Then in 5 years, your salary is 100k. Now you realize you can easily afford a house 3, 4 times your salary.....

What do you do?

You have to think out of the Chingapore box now brat.

Different place, different time.

kit = master discount hunter.

paid steve $0 to see into her future.

Grrrr......

What do you do?

i was calculating based on the worst case scenario, where we are trapped for 30 years because our property values haven't increased, or the cost of selling the home would mean we'd still owe money on the loan, or something awful like that. most likely, hopefully, we'll be able to break even much sooner. i'm just wondering why it is that people are so against buying. like, people were all "DO NOT BUY, buying is the worst decision you can make." why?

Whoa whoa whoa.......

Whadaya mean "tooth 8 you want anything"??

What about me man?

What am I chopped Tarklar?

so do you want anything? :P

1- I dunno where you get this notion that people don't like to buy. Yes they do. And, even if the value is stagnant, you'll be paying down the principal. Thus creating "equity" that can be utilized in many ways. Such as take out cash for another property, sell and buy (tax free transfer) another property.

2- I really don't want anything. But how can you forget me. You hurt my feelings.....

from the people on that forum! the very first response to my post was "why do you even want to buy?" followed by "you're not gonna save any more than if you were renting" and "if you're not buying a single family home to the tunes of 400k+, you might as well rent".
