That's a good rate. 30 year fixed?

yep. it was horrifying looking at how much we will have paid at the end of 30 years. there's definitely a strong incentive to pay it all off quicker.

Kat is rich, should be able to pay off in 3 years :content:

i wish...maybe 10 years.

You'll be fine. That's just the way our society is designed. Your income will increase over time, the house payment will not. (Maintenance fee will).

Much much cheaper than Singapore HDB flat..

You can buy a few condo here and be a landlord :)

haha yes. HDB flat is about 7-8 times that amount on the open market. but it's not so easy to rent places out here, most HOAs impose a rental cap.

i am curious. i was on a forum specific to WA state looking to find out information about the neighborhood the condo was in. i was surprised to find that most people were very adamant that it's cheaper to rent than to buy. and that you can get more (nicer location, bigger apartment) when you rent than when you buy. right now, if we wanted to rent at the same price, same type of apartment, we'd have to move way down south, in the thick of crime. as of april 18, our rent here is increasing by 15%.

i tried calculating what our expenses would be over 30 years if we bought. lets say with mortgage, HOA dues (that will increase over time), taxes, insurance, the cost of repairs and replacing appliances, that we spend $400,000 in 30 years. then we sell the apartment for $70K (assuming zero increase in property values). That's means we would have spent an average of $11,000 on living expenses annually. that's still cheaper than what we pay for rent now, and rent would be so so much higher in 30 years. even if we spent 500,000 over 30 years, thats still about 14,000 annually. still cheaper than renting over time. i don't understand what i'm missing...

property prices here are crazy and constantly rising. a friend of ours who lives in minnesota just bought a 1 bedroom house for 19K...but he has to drive 20 minutes to get to a gas station

property prices in singapore are much, much worse. :\

I can see the smoke comin' outta those monkey ears......

Your calculations, belong in Poland!

First of all, look at the United States consumer price index.

Next, your property 30 years ago, was worth about 10k. 30 years from now, it'll be 700k. Granted, milk will be 20 a gallon by then.....

Also, the average turnover in NYC is 7 years. What's yours over there?

Calculate for that amount of time.

30 years from now, your salary will be 300k.

There's a thousand more things you're not considering...

With that, I must now call you a "duh".

Stop torturing your brain, and just go with it.
