Next friday and i share a birthday with hubs.

Oh yeah, I remember you mentioning that...

Is there an expectation that with red envelopes for the birth of a baby that you'll put that money in their college fund?

No, but that's what I do with it. For the little egg roll, that amount is quite a sum already...

Already surpassed the older one...

I think, at least for me culturally, there was an expectation that the money went into a college fund.

I'm trying to figure out how to deal with the weirdness that is when one child has a bigger college fund than another. My daughter's will probably always be much bigger than the next one's. Doesn't seem quite fair.

Oh yeah I'm sure from 2000 years ago they had college funds lol.

The money is for kids to spend however they want.....

It's ok Troph. That's the way the egg rolls......

My neighbors kids are like that, the 13 year old has more than the 2 younger boys.

They'll have to understand. Education will get paid for, one way or the other. Don't feel weird.

I meant to say, I know you're weird, but don't feeel......weird....

I guess boys do need less money to start off their adult life with, an unfair aspect of gender inequality.

Different strokes for different folks Troph.

If it's that important, save more for the boy.

In the case of my neighbor, the girls father is upper middle, and the boys' father isn't.

But a friend of mine once gave me this advice. Pay more attention to your own retirement over the kids college funds.

Because the kids can find other ways to pay for school. You can't find other ways to pay for retirement. It makes sense.

My kid can pay for college herself or have her dad help her. I had to pay for it myself.

The only way I'd pay for a college education is if my retirement is already more than enough. You have multiple ways to pay for schooling, not multiple ways to pay for retirement. That's something you have to do for yourself since we do not culturallly take care of our elderly. Part of which I think is the need for independence first from our parents, and then from our children. My grandma lives on her own at 92 years old. I can only hope for such.

Steve... we wrote that at the same time.. LOL

I've got some put aside, but saving won't be a huge problem soon - we have no debt except some of my student loans and within 5 years, those will be gone too. With their rates and the current rates of return on low risk investments, I'd rather pay off the debt first than squirrel away towards retirement.

Retirement is something I worry about - I won't get social security and the Dane isn't going to get something nice like a pension, so yeah, it is important. It is one of the major reasons I am against his dream of building our own bigger house - it doesn't allow us to save like we can in our smaller house that is debt free and mostly renovated. He probably doesn't worry because he won't live long enough to run out of money. :sleepy:
