getting a SSN

My fiance is entering the U.S. on Sunday. I just called our local Social Security office to confirm the documents that he will need to get his SSN. The gentleman that I spoke to said my fiance will need to provide his visa, passport, an I-94 form (all things that I had expected). Then he said that he also needed either an I-766 form or an I-688 form to show proof that he can legally work. Is this true and, if so, where do I get these forms?

All they need is the I-94 and K-1 visa.

Print out this page and show to the officer at SSA office, point out part C.

Give the systems about 2 weeks to get updated after entry into the country before going for the SSN.
