Greetings all,

My spouse and her child are now Permaent Residents (green card holders) originally from the Philippines. Their passports are about to expire so we looked on the Philippine Embassy (San Francisco) website for instructions on how to renew their passports and found #5 to be a very confusing requirement;

5. Proof that applicant has not applied for foreign citizenship, e.g. resident alien card (green card).

So we are confused on this. They have green cards, so they cannot apply for a Philippine passport? They are not US citizens, so do not qualify for a US passport... ???

Any help on this would be appreciated, not to mention that this is the ONLY website I used to bring them here (K1), and it worked beautifully. Many thanks to everyone who gave advice and instruction!

As the instructions say, just submit a copy of the green cards.

They can not apply for US passport until they become US Citizens

You are misinterpreting the instructions.

The green cards proves that they didn't not give up Filipino citizenships. It means they didn't become US citizens. It means they as green card holders are still Filipino citizens entitled to Filipino passports.

Only US citizens can get US passports.
