NVC realistic timeframe and few important questions

I-130 approved in Vermont - Dec 15

called NVC once in early jan

they said wait till feb 6th before calling again for case and invoice number

It reached them as per their claim on december 30

Questions:

  1. can anyone advise me on the fastest best case scenario to process through NVC and the file to reach the embassy?
  2. How do you know when NVC assigns the case number?
  3. Also are original documents required?
  4. IMPORTANT : in I-130 my wife used her maiden name in NVC we want to use her married name and also get her passport changed so her legal name changes on the visa and then on her social security card and everything else. PLEASE ADVISE what needs to be done. She is applying for a new passport in her home country and should get it in 4 weeks. Can we use her married name in all NVC applications?

Thank you

You can view average NVC processing times on Saylin's spreadsheet;

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/lv?hl=en&key=0AtbvTEwLyHz1dDhjM3lXTEl1cW1SbjRwdW9YRGlIanc&hl=en&f=true&noheader=false&gid=

The NVC should send you a welcome letter and first packet of instructions when your case number is assigned, but in my experience it's best to call them once in a while to see if they have input your case into their system. They didn't contact us at all; in fact, we've never received unprompted correspondence from them. With that in mind, and as a friendly piece of advice, don't ever rely on them to contact you, otherwise you could be waiting a long time.

They no longer require original civil documents - just submit photocopies, but remember to take the originals to the interview. I'm not too sure how to answer your fourth point - I think there is a section on the DS-260 that asks whether she wishes to change her name on arrival in the US. It may be worth calling the NVC again and speaking with a rep just to make sure you're playing ball with what they want.

You have no country up so hard to say when you would get interview. You will not have case file sent to embassy until you have interview assigned.

Realistically NVC is a 3 to 5 month ordeal.

If your wife has new passport and name change of course that's what you can use. Originaks no longer need to be sent to NVC you send copies and take originals to interview.
