Been Waiting Since November for SSN

Hello Friends,

I have a bit of a stressful situation that my wife and I are facing.

I am an Australian Citizen who moved to Kansas to marry my US wife in August last year (2014). We married in September and have applied for my permanent residency as soon as we were married as well as my Work Authorization Card. I received my Work Authorization Card card in mid November (2014) and then applied for my Social Security Number in late November of the same year. I was under the impression it would not take that long, as the officer said "Normally it takes about 2-4 weeks." Weeks, and now months have come and gone. No number, no card, no nothing. I have called the national number recently to find out what the delay is and they informed me that there is no application under my name or any information with them. Should I go back to my local office and apply again? What could be the hold up? Is this normal?

Go to your local office. My Australian spouse got hers in 4 days!!! They can tell you whether or not there is an application in the system.

Definitely go back to your local office and ask what is going on. You should have received a form with your application number on there. Make an appointment or call the local office and ask the progress.

I got mine in one week after application.

The national office cannot provide you with any usable information.

They usually say 2-4 weeks in case there is name mismatches between your identification documents and your I-94 entry details.

My fiancee (at the time) got hers in about 5 working days, though they told us that it could take up to 4 weeks.

That said, our case of attempting to change her last name after the marriage went into a blackhole

and we never received any notice, and up on physically going to the SSA office and checking the status,

they told us that the case doesn't exist anymore because it was rejected.

I plan to return to change her last name after she receives EAD,

but any time you don't hear back from SSA office in the timeline that they mentioned,

it's best to go there in person. But you must bring your receipt number that you received

when you filed. Otherwise, they will tell you..."we don't have any case file out there for you

that we can look up." ... because supposedly, once the case is rejected, it is (he says)

permanently removed from their system. (Which didn't make any sense, but that's what

they are telling folks...)

I think we need to post somewhere to not call the national toll-free number to find out the status of a Social Security Card applications. I have been told in the past that they don't have any information and the only thing they could do was provided me with the street address, business hours, and telephone numbers for the local offices.

We are having a smiliary issue. We were told by the local Seatlte office that my fiance would receive his within 4 weeks. It's been 4 weeks and nothing. The 1-800 social security number stated they had no record of his request.

We called homeland immigration/security and they are going to help lookup the information to see where he is in the system.

So frustrating

SSN for male K-1 visa holder, within the 74 days of POE date? without name change? Something's wonky - ask for SAVE database lookup at SSA office on VISA Name and A#.

Seriously, go back in person.
