Hello, last year I had spontaneous pnuemothorax. Will this cause problems for my medical?

if they do an x-ray and if they see any spot like a dot or blur on the film they will automatically do sputum exam. if you don't have active Tuberculosis you don't have to worry about it, sputum exam if negative, they will culture it and will delay the process for about 2months, and if positive they will start you with 6-month treatment.

but then if your x-ray film is clear then you are good to go..

btw, what caused your pneumothorax?

No cause was declared by my doctor. I had an operation though. Will the doctors of St. Lukes be able to differentiate scars from my operation (if there are)?

it may help if you bring your medical records like previous x-ray and note from your doctor. but once they see any scar or any spot (it doesn't mean tuberculosis) you still have to undergo their process. they won't honor/recognize any medical results outside. you previous medical records can only help you explain to them your medical history and that's it.

What if you have previous history of tuberculosis and no scars were left? Will you be exempted from taking the sputum test?

You could call SLEC and ask them what they recommend. Such as, would bringing your treatment documents help on the day of your medical?

The scar may cause the doctor to wonder, for sure bring copies of your medical records from this even.

I almost died from that happening to me some years back... scary for sure.

It certainaly cannot hurt to have med records to show that the suspicous shadow that will show on your x-ray is not TB. The doctors do not have to accept any other doctor's mediclal records, but they can. So have these records ready.

It would be a shame to delay your visa over TB concerns that could have been resolved immediately if you had the right records to show them. So make sure you have them.

SP will not prevent you from getting a visa.

Primary spontaneous pneumothorax is an abnormal accumulation of air in the space between the lungs and the chest cavity (called the pleural space) that can result in the partial or complete collapse of a lung. It is not a contagious disease as what SLEC will be looking for. TB is a contagious disease and must be treated and successfully irradiated from you before you can proceed with the completion of your visa processing.

As recommended by others, bring your medical records with you but only offer them if asked for or if the topic comes up about your history of SP. Let sleeping dogs lie.
