How soon should you notify the USCIS when you change address? See, my AOS has been approved & it is just what me & my husband is waiting because we both have a good job waiting for both of us in another state,so when should we file for a change of address? And also, my SSN is still under my maiden name with a notation that it is only valid for work with DHS authorization,could we change the SSN when we're already settled in our new place or should we do it before we relocate? Thanks so much!

You must notify USCIS of your change of address within 10 days of moving... your husband/sponsor has 30 days to notify them of his change of address...

as to changing your SSN it does not matter where you do this as the SSA is a nation department not specific to any state...

If you have green card, go down to the local SSA office, and do the name change, and remove the DHS work authorization notation on the card at the same time.

As for the address changes, You need to file AR-11, within 10 days and I-865 within 30 days to update the address with the USCIS.

OUR TIME LINE Please do a timeline it helps us all, thanks.

Is now a US Citizen immigration completed Jan 12, 2012.

As for the name change and removal of restrictions on your SS card, if you are moving and don't want to wait for 2-4 weeks at your current address, it makes sense to take care of that once you are at the new place.

Good luck with the move and congratulations on the jobs!

Yeah, because one change of address (AR-11, which can be done online) is for any non-US citizen in the USA whenever they move. The other (I-865) is the form that someone who has ever filed an I-864 on behalf of someone else (like your husband did to sponsor you in the USA) to file whenever they move, it's called the Sponsors Notice of Change of Address.

I'm not sure about that, it contradicts the forms instructions that I've pasted below. I wouldn't be suprised if the adjucating officer was wrong, USCIS employees seem to be good at being wrong.

When Should I Use Form I-865?

If at any time in the past you completed a Form I-864,Affidavit of Support, to sponsor an immigrant, you are required to report your change of address within 30 days of the change if the sponsorship agreement is still in force.

The sponsorship agreement remains in force until the sponsored immigrant:

Becomes a U.S. citizen;

Can be credited with 40 quarters of work;

Departs the United States permanently and either formally abandons lawful permanent resident status (by filing Form I-407) or is formally held in a removal proceeding to have abandoned that status;

In a removal proceeding, loses the lawful permanent resident status that the sponsored immigrant obtained based on your Form I-864; or

Dies.

I'd do it when you get there since the form is to be sent in within 10 days (or 30 for the I865) after you've moved, so doing it beforehand isn't really necessary :)

According to the form instructions, yes, it appears that the sponsor would need to file a change of address. And since there could be a civil penalty for not filing, it makes sense to file the free form.

The only reason that might be different in our case is the "40 quarters of work" because spouses can "combine quarters", and between the both of us, we meet that criterion:

Yeah, I saw that as well and noted that, but not needing to file just because you have an approved AOS doesn't seem to be true. How come we can figure these things out but USCIS employees keep getting it all wrong? :P
