If you buy a licensed disk with a movie...a store in Russia they usually have the subtitles and work everywhere. Just check the description.
Is that supposed to be an Oxymoron? Licensed disks in Russia! LOL, they are right behind China when it comes to piracy.

Yes, it's true, the situation is really bad there with piracy (so I hear), but it's still possible to buy a LICENSED RUSSIAN DISC.

I used to like it too (like most Russians who celebrated many New Years in the 70s-80s), but as I grow older I find myself more and more irritated with the lead character Zhenya. What a wimp. And he's supposed to be the archetypal Good Guy.

This movie was horrible!!!!

It could've been done in 12 minutes, but it took like 3 hours! It was so long, it had two discs! My wife explained it to me, then when we went to watch it, I had to take a nap in the middle because it was so long. I was expecting it to be over in about an hour since the plot wasn't very complex. I hardly ever sleep through movies, but so far, of the 6 Russian movies I've watched, I've slept through 3 of them. This was one!

All in all, I haven't been very impressed with Russian cinema. I guess I was spoiled living in Korea, where cinema rivals Hollywood's best. I'll keep at it though. Gotta learn Russian somehow!

If you want to get some good sleep get a hold of the 4-100 discs containing the series Quiet flows the Don, like watching the rise and fall of the Roman Empire in the original Latin. Get a hold of some caffiene or Meth you will need it. Elena is telling me the man who wrote it won a nobel prize, probably for curing insomnia. hehehe

I had to take 5 years of Latin in school. I would probably fare better watching the rise and fall of the Roman Empire in Latin than I would a Russian mini-series in Russian. That said, caffiene and Meth are readily available 'round here, so I guess I'll get on over to E-Bay to see if I can find Queit flows the Don. I sure could use a nice nap!

I'm still amazed by the pride Russians exhibit in their homegrown stuff. I've heard them say "It's not great, but it's OUR not great, so therefore it's great! Best-of-the-best Russian cinema." You wanna really get your girl going, sit her down to a History channel special on the SS or the Nazi invasion of WWII. You'll hear several times how much better Russians are than the Nazis. (Then that'll be followed by how great the coffee makers and washing machines made in Germany are now. "Germany cars more good like Russian. But only because Soviet Union. Maybe after like 20 years, Russian cars will be best-of-best in whole world.") Every day is a treat!

You mean that Russian cars are not the best, my wife deceived me I have to cancel that order for my zhiguli. Hmm I wonder if I can still get my hands on that Yugo I saw on ebay.

Acutally I took 2 years of latin from a nun so old I believe she taught romulus and remus(sorry slim Im sure there was a flashback with that).

Russians do take pride in a lot of their russian things, but americans are no different we are still under the impression that football is an american sport(when the rest of the world knows it is not).

Just to add to the movie list:

Dont rent Vashka Easoff - its half russian, half hungarian and only partly subtitled. Hard to watch so why bother. Today I get to introduce my wife to a true american classic - Buckaroo Banzai across the 8th dimension.

Anyone seen any good movies lately?

I'm supposed to watch one today (but Football's on....) about some guy that's taking care of his kids and falling in love with his boss (same guy from the 3-hour Moscow/St. Pete apartment switcheroo flick) that's supposed to be pretty funny. Supposed to be? It's two parts, so we'll see how much funny they can pack into two discs. Holding my "funny attention" over the course of three hours is quite a challenge.

"You mean there are no explosions or fart jokes? What kind of movie is this?"

Can't remember if anyone's brought up Eastern Promises. Viggo Mortensen plays a Russian mafia guy in London. Really a good movie and I've read online that even Russians are saying he pulls off the whole Russian badass type perfectly. Everything from his Russian accent to his posture I guess is pretty spot on. I can't comment too much on that, not having been around a lot of that crowd and all :) but he's definitely got that complete look of disdain/disinterest that I've seen on most male Russian faces. And oh yeah, it's a pretty damn good movie too.

It was actually voted the best Russian accent by a non-Russian in a movie ever.

I saw it; it was good, albeit violent. And I wanted to yell at Naomi Watts for being so stupid.

True, it's probably not a "chick flick." Good popcorn movie tho.

Yup, I agree, I just saw it this weekend, and I thought it was awsome.
