How long to get the Visa Upon Entering

I have filed for a visa for my husband via the Rome Embassy. If I understand correctly, if he is approved he will enter the US and present his paperwork to Homeland Security and then his visa will be mailed to the US address provided. I believe it could take up to 45 days for the visa to arrive - can anyone provide personal experience? Can he leave the US before the visa arrives and still enter the country again? His mother is in poor health and we are concerned that if he enters he may not be able to leave at will. Thanks.

No, his visa is affixed to his passport. Upon PoE it will be activated and then his green card will be mailed to the address on file - provided he's paid the $165 immigrant visa fee - usually within 60 - 90 days.

CBP will stamp and endorse his passport at PoE, and his endorsed immigrant visa will itself serve as temporary proof of LPR status for up to one year.
