Crime committed while AOS pending

I'm posting this for a friend of mine. Her 17 year old stepson came here a few years ago on a tourist visa, and then decided that he wanted to stay here and live with his father. I believe they have filed for AOS so he can get a green card. A couple of weeks ago he stole their car during the early morning hours. Then he got in a car accident and fled the scene. He doesn't even have a driver's license. So, now he has a court hearing about all these various charges. Does anyone have any idea what this will do for their case? They do have an attorney, but they haven't spoken to him about this yet.

He could get deported. It can also make his AoS more complicated as they will do background checks and this will pop up.

Advise them to retain an experienced immigration attorney.
