A lot of people here don't double check where their petition is being sent, they assume that because they sent their papers to Texas that's where they will be processed. California filers fill in that they were processed in Texas, they receive NOA2 in 2 months and Igor's list and timeline predictions get messed up and gives Texas people waiting 6+ months false hope...

Since the three letters in your receipt number clearly identifies where you are being processed I came up with a suggestion for the people who designed the timeline etc. Why not make it a requirement that everyone fill in their receipt number (would never be visible on the webpage for others to see of course) or at least the first 3 letters and make it so that it automatically identifies you as either California or Texas filer. I'm not a computer expert but I am pretty sure that if someone here is tech savvy enough it could be done.

That actually sounds reasonable. Do you think folks would be willing to input their #? I can make it optional (or at least the first 3 digits). This information would then "override" the service center in case they input that incorrectly.

I mentioned this idea to a few people on the forum and they sounded at least comfortable with the three fist letters option. If it clearly states that it won't be visible to others and won't be used for anything by VJ other than for correctly sorting them at a service center than I think people would be fine. And I think it would help out a lot.

I actually sent a message to a person here who showed up on Igor's list as having received his NOA2 from Texas and it was clear that he had actually been processed in California. He said he had sent his papers to Texas but it had been processed in California. He didn't realize everyone are being sent to Texas lockbox first and then sorted to where they should go. So he had filled in his timelines has having it sent to Texas Service Center and then transferred to California.

Because service center is done by address you could also look at location of the profile and not have more person information stored online. I still remember that mess when they where hacking all the info on the USCIS site to get "better" data for VJ

I am not aware about what happened back then. What happened?

Well if you only go by the 3 first letters of the number there is no sensitive info at risk since those 3 letters only tells at what service center you are and those letters are known by most people here anyway.

Back about 5 years ago a group came on here trying to show they were going to help everyone out by publishing the status of every active case at the centers. The old USCIS site wasn't very secure. Anyway the management listened to the voice of those that were concerned with the motives of these people and they left after a few months.

And how is this related to Igor's list?

Great suggestion.

I've looked through Igor's list in great detail recently. On the TSC I-129F list, there are easily 25-30% of cases that are clearly mis-identified as the state listed in the member profile and or the member themselves posting on the forums reveals their petition was actually processed at CSC. It does mess up the timeline predictions quite a bit. The average shown is around 150-160d, when, for real TSC petitions, it is actually 200d give or take a few.

It isn't directly But you did suggest storing the receipt number on VJ which puts requirements on the site to protect personal identifiable information and would raise their exposure to legal action if hacked.

I agree though with the security on USCIS itself it technically doesn't matter if anyone get your receipt number as if you would want to do something about that case USCIS will still ask you for information only the petitioner could give such as date of birth. Some actions also need full legal name of the petitioners. So only having the receipt number only results in that person being able to check on your status.

But even safer is to use the 3 first letters as they only identify what center you are sent to.
