It is a no-go area if you're afraid of people who look different, otherwise it's just another part of a large cosmopolitan city. Not everyone can fit in Holland Park.

Not sure I have been to Holland Park, the thing is that the area used to be poor but cosmopolitan, now just poor and very non cosmopolitan.

On one of the estates they were flying the flag of ISIS.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

It has always been rough, used to live there years ago. When I was last back I had a few trips in the area, scary what has happened.

Canary Wharf is in TH but not usually associated with it.

That is the actions of a few extremists being used to suggest that a whole area is unsafe. Incidentally there was another story this week about gangs of racist whites on the prowl in London. It depends on what you want to believe. I work in London and have spent quite a bit of time in Tower hamlets. Besides inner city youth crime, it isn't that bad.

Certainky not when you compare it to inner city areas in some American cities. Those really are no go.

Housing estates have a lot of problems. Who knew

It is all relative, we used to go pubbing in the area when I was in my teens, would not do that now. Still happy to go in the Lahore Kebab House.

Guardian is about as hard left as you can, their coverage.

From your link:

Five men were arrested in January 2013 as part of an investigation into the gang,[7][8] and three were given jail sentences on 6 December 2013.[9]

So it would appear that there are some people in that area that break the law. Happens all over the place, doesn't it? It also appears that some of the people that broke the law were arrested and prosecuted and - some of them - even convicted. The no-go zone myth suggests that the law of the land isn't enforced in these areas and that some foreign law applies there. That is obviously false.

Nobody contests that there are bad parts of town - that's true in just about any town.

It has always been not the best area, but it is an area that I am familiar with over many years.

Sadly things will get worse. a lot worse.

Certainly it's relative, I don't deny that there are extremists in London, there certainly are but the exaggeration of the tabloid media seeks to create the impression that it's rampant or that we're talking about whole sections of the city when we're really talking about a few dodgy neighbourhoods which have historically had a lot of problems.

US cities have bad areas that are bigger and a have a lot worse problems.

I would say this is more like fascism, that are confronted Mosley back in the 30's.

You want to think things would get better, sad to see when things go backwards.

There was n interesting article in the Independent today, obviously it is all about control.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”
