My hubby has a shredder and he shreds EVERYTHING! Even the little sticker with his name & address on it from a magazine subcription. I think he goes a lil overboard, but I guess after reading that, I agree with him.

Yeah it isn't hard to get someones SSN at all, I work at a college and that used to be used as your Student Number, so people give it to me all the time to make appointments and look up stuff. Of course I see so many I forget them, but still. They've started using a new one but you can still use the SSN and most do cause they can't remember their new ones!

I tear ours into a zillion pieces... but if somebody else tried to use them they still wouldn't get anywhere - if WE can't get any of those darned cards I'd like to see somebody else get approved for them! :P (why DO they send card applications that they have no intention of approving anyway? talk about a pointless activity)

Best is to return another companies junk mail in their envelopes.

And keeps the posties in a job. And cuts down on your recycling.

I have a friend that does that. He stuffs the business envelopes full of mail.

Loved it.:lol: I have called, written letters, torn up the forms and returned to them in thier postage paid envelopes and still have mail from them. I figured they might get upset on used postage for dead man and torn apps. I will have to try your tactic next time.

I just recieved a card for my grandmother at my house last month. $20,000 limit. (How they got my address, I have no idea. Different last names, and we have never lived at the same address, or even the same state). She has been dead for 10 years.

At least she still has good credit in the afterlife.

It's pretty easy to stop the pre-approved credit card offers... Just call 1-888-5-opt-out.

This will take your name off the list the credit card companies use to look at your credit score used for those pre approved credit card deals...

Then call up everyone you have financial dealings with (your mortgage company, etc) and tell them you don't want them to share any information with their affiliates (i.e. their credit card branch)

I did this and haven't had a preapproved credit card app in ovber 4 years.

Yes you can do it for yourself it is when they are sending for DEAD persons you have a problem. I have called them and for some reason it stops for short time and then they restart. I have new married name and my dead husband never lived at my address now and we still get things for him montly.

isnt it like totally ridiculous.

Like I said before, in England I got tons for my late husband but after a year or so, it did slow down quite a lot.

But here, its amazing!

We are currently living with Dougs mom. His Dad passed away in 1980 and yet he gets pre-approved credit cards, etc.

He actually passed away from MS and this week got a letter saying he was pre-approved to get help from Medicare..... my hubby looked at it, and was quite annoyed, for good reasons, tore it up and said 'cant believe this $hit, my Mom had all this hassle doing stuff to help him when he was alive and hardly got anywhere, and now he's been dead 25 years they say he's approved for medical care.'

I sometimes wonder what those companies think, if they have time to check phonebooks etc to target ppl, cant they also check to see registrations for those passed away?

Might be extra staff and extra hours, but at least there would be a lot of paper going unwasted and a lot of ppls feeling left unhurt
